I really had no motivation to write-up my thoughts on UFC 117. Ive been mired in a bit of an MMA drought, which came to a painful climax during last weeks pitiful 0-4 UFC on Versus performance. Blah.
But then I was reminded why I do this in the first place. Poster AllDayJ reached out to me and offered a stark reminder of my selfish ways. This isnt about me or my losses or even the glory. No, it is about my fans. I must not let them down. AllDayJ informed me that my UFC pieces are all I look forward to on my Saturdays. All of a sudden, his posting handle is starting to make a lot more sense. But nonetheless, who am I to disappoint a wide-eyed admirer? On Saturday, my dismal streak ends. Who knows, perhaps my results have suffered because my write-ups have been AWOL. Eureka!
Anderson Silva -440
Chael Sonnen +350
Lookit, nobodys enjoyed the smacktalk clinic that Sonnen (26-10-1) has put on more than me. Being a bit of an expert at verbally abusing others myself, its been a great ride. But lets not kid ourselves. Thats all it was - a ride. If Anderson Silva (26-4-0) cant use this as fuel to drop the recent antics that have plagued him, Im not sure anything ever will.
Think of all the people online who have talked shit to you. Who transform into brazen warriors without fear of repercussion. Now imagine if magically you had one chance to wrap your hands around their skinny little necks. Nice, isnt it?
This is Anderson Silvas reality. Sonnen has attacked him on all levels. It is time for him to rise up and remind the world why he should be the most feared fighter in the cage. Sonnen is talented, but he is not Anderson Silva.
Of course the price is steep. Look to pound some parlays with Silva, or perhaps a victory in the first round (+253). Should Silva actually lose here, it will be a huge victory for little guys with big mouths all over the world. We cant have that.
Chael Sonnen
Clay Guida -110
Rafael dos Anjos -110
There I go again, betting against one of my all-time favorite fighters. Yep, sorry Clay (26-8-0). I do love you dearly, but dos Anjos (14-4-0) is a clear cut step up in class in my view. Of course, almost everytime I chuck one of my guys, I end up with mud on my face. Guida vs. Diaz, anyone? Grrrrrr
For dos Anjos, this is the pivotal step-up in opposition that he has been waiting for. Following three straight victories against Rob Emerson, Kyle Bradley and Terry Etim, Clay Guida will offer a much bigger challenge.
Guida is all heart and hair. It was good to see him tap out Shannon Gugerty after suffering consecutive losses. Unfortunately, the buck should stop there. Dos Anjos is yet another Brazilian rising star, and I look for him to eek out an exciting match.
Junior dos Santos -360
Roy Nelson +300
Speaking of rising Brazilian stars, check out Junior dos Santos (11-1-0)! From the very second that I laid eyes on this beast, I knew it was love. His five UFC victories have come against a mixed bag of legends (Cro Cop), up-and-comers (Werdum, Struve, Gonzaga) and Gilbert Yvel (lol). Now comes a most-interesting matchup vs. big Roy Nelson (16-4-0).
I will admit that Nelson has experienced way more success already in the UFC than I originally expected once his time on TUF was over. Yet here he is, facing the probably the third biggest threat in the heavyweight division behind Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin. Good for him.
Im looking forward to the slow-motion gifs showing dos Santos delivering devastating body blows to Nelsons omnipresent gut, with jiggle ripples shaking all round the room. Not many people will be taking out dos Santos these days, and Nelson is certainly not one of them.
Ricardo Almeida -190
Matt Hughes +165
1. Hughes (45-7-0) is a legend who is fading at a ridiculous pace.
2. Almeida (12-3-0) is yet ANOTHER rising Brazilian star who will submit Hughes with ease.
3. The only reason this line is as low as it is is because you have a household name facing a relative unknown.
4. Take the money and run.
Its Brazilian night in the Bread household. Silva, dos Anjos, dos Santos and Almeida. Bread likey.
