This is from my friend who works as valet in Vegas:
"Of course we have to remember that tipping is not mandatory but is expected. If the valet is an a-hole and brings the car up screeching the tires and does not open the door for you and stuff like that then he probably does not deserve a tip. I come from a weird sort of position on that were I am grateful for anything were as some guys I know are insulted by $1. The way I look at it is a bunch of ones adds up ya know? I don't even mind getting change or casino chips. Sure it is annoying but it still adds up. The one insult is if it is less than a dollar. That either means they are that poor or they are trying to insult or punish me and either way I don't need it.
Personally I feel like this-
If you ask for anything special like "Keep it up front" or if it is a huge truck or something that requires extra work or space that should be a fiver.
If I get a buck or two I say thank you and am pleased. If I get three or more they get an extra big smile. LOL
There are a couple things that are definitely not cool and as I work at a hotel where I see the same people all week I can not believe people actually do this. Seems they don't think we'll
remember them. Oh, we remember them all right.-
The "I'll catch you on the way back guy" Uh, no he won't. He may drop his car off with a different valet or he may 'forget' or whatever. This guy has no intention to tip and is just lying.
The "I have no cash on me right now guy" Really? You are going out into this big world, and especially the streets of Las Vegas with not even a dollar? Liar.
The "I have no small bills on me right now guy" Really? That's cool. I have over a hundred dollars in small bills in my pocket right now. I can make change. That guy is a liar and just trying to get out of tipping.
The "I am gonna talk on my cell phone as soon as I see my car coming guy" This guy can thus avoid all contact with the valet and thus avoid a tip.
But the BIGGEST insult to me is the guy who just ignores me, gets in his car and as I am standing there with my hand on the door handle ready to close the door for him he pulls his own door closed. "
