really is just about the stupidest thing going.

I mean, I love international hockey. I watched every second of Canada's games in every Olympics since Nagano and every Canada Cup and World Cup. I watch the games and then sweat and fret about them in between. It is one of about 3 sporting things left in the world I really care about - and it is by far #1.

But what is this World Championships shit? Why do we keep doing it? We know that the best players are involved in the NHL playoffs, right?

Does it generate revenue for something useful? Are there actually people who convince themselves it means something?

:fok:

But the problem is it's not a world championships. You would have to have a Casperwaits level of self-delusion to imagine that anything is being sorted out in terms of the hockey supremacy of nations. It's a battle of leftovers.

It would be like baseball having a tournament every October between the Pirates and the Royals and calling it a world championship.

This event has generated a ton of revenue when it was held in Canada (Halifax and Quebec city) about 3 years ago. This "tourney" and all World Jr's should be held in Canada minus the cities of Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver.

Why the fok would they schedule that during the NHL playoffs? I would actually care if it happened at any other time. Having NHLers reorganized into national teams is pretty cool.

But common. Do it in July or something.

So you'd have the world work around a handful of US owners. If you believe your best players are in the NHL, then send them.
Hockey is a sport with a lot of luck. It's not about proving anything in a short tournament. It is about holding an international event and watching the progress and development of hockey in numerous countries. It is a World Championship and deserves to be called such. If your local events are more important to you, then that's your business. I doubt the world gives a shit about San Jose, Vancouver, Nashville or any other club team.

Should the Olympics drop hockey because next time the Nhlers might not participate?

I don't think it's about that, it's about scheduling a world championship at the time it is. The soccer world cup is scheduled after the regular season in the European leagues, the basketball world championship is scheduled before the regular NBA season, the world baseball classic is scheduled before the regular MLB season. Having a hockey world championship during the NHL playoffs devalues it to the point of irrelevance.

Fair point, it's pretty irrelevant anyway whatever the sport but it's still fun to watch the best people in a sport playing for their respective countries especially when a certain sport is dominated by a single market. The WBC is irrelevant but it's great to see the likes of Japan and South Korea dominating "America's Pastime".

Personally, I would be okay with eliminating the NHL altogether and only having international competition, building each year to a world championship. I would prefer it 100 fold.

But given reality, the current world championships of hockey are all stupid n' shit.

And yes, the Olympics will be just as pointless if they go back to not having the best players. I mean, hopefully everyone has fun - but the actual medals would be a joke.

They are targeting a different market (spectators and TV viewers) and they seem to be successful.

The opening game of the 2010 IIHF World Championship took place in the Veltins-Arena of Gelsenkirchen, home of the German Bundesliga football club FC Schalke 04. The state-of-the-art stadium was transformed into a giant ice hockey rink with enhanced facilities and increased capacity for spectators. The innovative idea proved to be a phenomenal success - breaking the spectator record for any ice hockey event worldwide as 77,803 fans filled the stadium. As well as the strong spectator interest, the opening game was broadcast in close to 90 countries across the globe –gauging an impressive 35 million viewers.

There were a record number of almost 200 broadcast partners in more than 100 territories, as well as the highest cumulative audience figure in the history of the event, at 734.66 million viewers, a 14% increase on the year before. The figures clearly demonstrate the strength and appeal of the event, they were achieved despite the fact that the 2010 IIHF World Championship was scheduled between the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver and the FIFA World Cup™ in South Africa.
