Thanksgiving Week 2010 Sports Reflections
I am sure that there have been more eventful weeks in sports for some but for me this past Thanksgiving week had more special moments and storylines than any one week I can ever remember.
The following is a timeline of stories or moments that stood out the most to me.
Tuesday:
The Maui Classic showcased two great match-ups. First was UConn against Michigan St and then we were treated to Kentucky against Washington. Uconn and Kentucky both won and Kentucky went on to win the tournament but the games had end of the season March Madness type performances and were just great basketball.
Thursday:
It wasnt a game or a play that stood out to me on Thanksgiving Day but rather a story. It was the story CBS did about the tragic death of Chris Henry and how his mom decided to donate his organs. How 4 people who received vital organ transplants are alive and healthy today because of the selfless and compassionate act of a grieving mother.
Friday:
The day began with the Auburn/Alabama Iron Bowl game. It started out just as many had predicted with Alabama dominating Auburn early. Many had suspected that while Auburns run had been nice, once they had to face a real defense it would all come crumbling down. In the first half it appeared all the naysayer were right as Alabama went to the break up 24-7.
In the second half though Auburn came out focused and determined. Cam Newton who was already a front runner for the Heisman Trophy proved for any lingering doubters as to his talents. The most surprising part of the comeback and eventual win though was that the overlooked Auburn defense manned up and shut Alabama down in the second half.
If that comeback wasnt enough we had yet another great comeback in the nightcap. Boise St jumped out to a 24-7 (ironic right) lead on Nevada as they went to the half in that game as well. In the second half though Nevada came roaring back and as time expired Boise St needed a last second field goal from 26 yards to break the tie and win the game. The field goal attempt by kicker Kyle Brotzman was pushed right and the game went to overtime. In overtime Brotzman again missed a chipshot field goal, this time pulling it left and Nevada upset Boise St 34-31.
Saturday:
There would be no amazing comebacks on Saturday that left you just scratching your head. Actually Saturdays games were pretty much status quo. No, it would not be a game that dropped jaws on Saturday but it would be a particular play in a game. If you hung around to watch the Oklahoma/Oklahoma St game you were witness to maybe one of the all-time greatest interceptions ever. A seemingly arrant pass that appeared to be heading out of bounds where the only reception made would be by the water boy was suddenly turned into what will probably be the Play of the Year and a guaranteed ESPY. With a fully extended leap Broderick Brown of Oklahoma St tips the ball back into the field of play to his teammate Shaun Lewis for the interception. The combination of awareness, timing, athletic ability was simply amazing.
Sunday:
The Buffalo Bills have played tough all season but they just simply arent that good of a team. Sunday though, whether it was lack of focus on Pittsburgh part or just something deep down rising to the surface in the Bills they were in the game with the Steelers. Not only did they fight back from being down 10-0 to tie the game at 16 as time expired. In overtime Bills receiver Steve Johnson dropped a pass in the end zone that would have won the game. Johnson was noticeably shaken after the game but he manned up and faced reporters and accepted responsibility. Later though after reflecting on things Johnson realized that it was actually Gods fault according to his Twitter.
The theme of the day must have been receivers named Johnson on Sunday. In the Tennessee/Houston game the Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan antagonized and threw a punch at the Texans receiver Andre Johnson. Next we saw Johnson totally lose it and he went after Finnegan with a furry. In the confrontation Finnegans helmet got ripped off and as Johnson took him to the ground a couple very solid punches landed on or around Finnegans face and head.
Some of you may have had weeks in sports more memorable for a particular event or moment but I think you will be hard pressed to find a more impressive week over-all than Thanksgiving Week 2010.
