I am looking at the standings. It just seems so stupid and weak. You look at the won/lost columns and it looks like 23 of the 30 teams are .500 or better.

People in-the-know realize that there is a separate column for overtime losses. So overtime wins count just the same in your W/L record but O/T losses don't. What is that? We don't want to hurt the losing team's feelings?

Weak. Namby pamby.

It gives me the same feeling I get from weasely politicians. Things are being spun to look better than they really are and you must think I'm stupid to fall for what you are selling.

Hey here's an idea. Every game has a winner and a loser - how bout we just track wins and losses? That's it. No points - just wins and losses like MLB and NBA and NFL. If you lose in overtime or a shootout, you lose. If you don't like it, get better at overtime and shootouts you bunch of gay-ass wank-monkeys.

I agree, if they are going to have an overtime let it be for the win not an *asterisk* overtime loss!
Better yet, do away with overtime/shootout for regular season games.

pussies.

Well we've been there, done that (with the draws). Had them for decades. There was a collective will to move away from it. I was part of that collective will. I like for games to have a winner and a loser if it can be accomplished with little fuss (which it should be able to).

But once decided that we would indeed have a winner/loser in every game, it became necessary to appease the traditionalists. A shoot-out is a not a traditional hockey play so a loss should not be as bad as losing through proper hockey. So say the traditionalists.

Except for some reason the wins count as much.

If you ask some traditionalists, they would prefer there be yet another level of engineering in how points are awarded and a regulation win should be 3 points, an overtime win 2, an overtime loss 1, and a regulation loss 0. I kid you not, I have heard people argue that passionately. :duh:

Fuck traditionalists. We are just talking regular season games here anyway. If someone who was fighting for 16th spot misses the playoffs because they weren't as good at shootouts as they should have been, tough shit.

The playoffs still have sudden death. The playoffs are what matters.

In many regular season games, both teams can make a reasonable claim of having an above .500 head-to-head record.

Retarded.

Of course there's shame in it, Polar. If you spend three hours at something, trying your very hardest, the worst possible outcome is the accomplishment of nothing. That's what a draw is, two teams admitting that they accomplished nothing on that day. For those of us that live in North America, we demand a binary result, because of its elegance and affirmation that something was accomplished. Now I don't like shootouts or NFL overtime, but I simply want to tweak those systems; it would be unconscionable to tolerate a draw when it is all too easy to contrive a fair method for determining the superior side on that day.

I have to disagree, I like the system the way it is.

I'd PREFER it be the old way; after 60 minutes, you play another 5 minutes 5-on-5, and if there is still no winner, it's a tie.

But once the NHL decided to do away with ties and have the shootout decide it instead, I think the pity point is good to have. The idea of playing 65 minutes and then getting 0 points after a stupid shootout decides it... no thanks.

Now, you can talk shit about the shootout if you like, but there is no denying that it is a ton of fun and the fans love it. "Playing until there's a winner" isn't realistic in the regular season, either. If you refuse to have ties, I think this system works.

One interesting idea I'd heard floating around (but would never get passed) was making every game worth 3 points. If you win in regulation, you get 3 pts. Win in OT or SO, and you get 2 pts while your opponent gets 1. That way, instead of the pity point coming out of thin air, it comes out of your win instead.

At least it's not the pre-lockout way; 5 minute 4-on-4 for OT, if no winner is decided, it's a tie. If there is a winner, the loser still gets a point. Then we had four categories in the standings; W-L-T-OTL. Just awkward.

I don't like that some games are worth 2 points and others 3. And it is irritating that when you look at the standings you have to add a teams shootout loses to their regular loses to get a good idea of how they're doing.
I like shootouts but agree with Mudcat, the loser shouldn't get a point.

It sounds like we are close philosophically, the difference being that I simply have no pity.

MWAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!!!!!!!!!

I agree with you Muddy. I've been saying the same thing since they introduced the 5-min OT + best-of-3 SO - fuck points, just count a win as a win and a loss as a loss. Maybe you could make the SO a best-of-5 if you wanna give the better team a higher chance of winning it, but that one-point shit is garbage. Teams that are tied after 2 periods often play the whole 3rd conservatively just to get their silly point.

FUKKIN retarded is what it is.
