The Gift of Life

His story isnt the first, it happens everyday across the nation but the presentation on CBS Sports yesterday about the Chris Henry organ donation and the 4 lives that were saved because of it was maybe one of the most heart wrenching good vibe stories of all time.

Chris Henry, star receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals died in December of 2009 after injuries he suffered in a car accident. His mother, faced with the loss of her son made a decision that would forever change the lives of 4 other people and their families. She gave permission for Chris organs to be donated and 2 lungs, a liver, a pancreas and 2 kidneys went to 4 patients on a waiting list.

I am a sucker for feel good stories and even more when they involved athletes. While this story would be touching had I simply read about it in an article I was very impressed with how well it was presented by CBS. Im not ashamed to admit that about 2 minutes into it there was a lump in my throat and by the end I was balling uncontrollably. Even now as I write about it I can feel my eyes starting to water.

There are many of us who do give in life, maybe we dont give to every single worthy cause out there but we do give. I cant think of a more beneficial and rewarding donation than that of a life. You wont receive a Man of the Year for it or a Nobel Peace Prize and even if you did you obviously wouldnt be around to collect any such award.

We live in a me society and I get that, I mean looking out for oneself should be a priority but even the most ME oriented person can do this at no cost to their own personal pursuit of me first and everyone else last.

If you are an organ donor then good for you, if youre not then take a little time to seriously consider becoming one. Even in death there is no greater gift than life.

good say wally... outside of being some religious nutball pawn, i cant really think of a reason for people not to be donors...if i got anything worth keeping when i croak, i hope its put to good use.

Wally, dont let Plommer calling you a pussy bother you ... you should understand that the only times when Plommer cries are when his favorite massage parlor gets closed down or when his favorite paid companion moves out of town... a story about a total psycho who donated some organs fails in comparison to some of the truly meaningful things in his life...
:rayray:

People who aren't donors can come up with some pretty dopey reasons for it. Usually it relates to the idea that they will still be alive when they are dead. Like they might say how weird it would be for someone else to be using their eyes - as if they will be sitting there dealing with it.

Personally I don't expect to be alive when I'm dead so people can use whatever parts of me they want.
