Suddenly my Windows Media Player doesn't work. When I click on a video that yesterday would have opened it right up and played, today it doesn't work. I get the normal tab at the bottom for Windows Media Player but no actual player. WTF?

I didn't do anything to my system - it just changed on its own. I have tried rebooting.

Any thoughts?

Uninstalling and Reinstalling the Windows Media Player:

Step 1.

Uninstalling the Windows Media Player:
1. Go to Start and in the search type "Turn Windows features On or Off".
2. Click on "Turn Windows features On or Off".
3. Browse to the Media Features and uncheck the mark in front of Windows Media Player.
4. Restart the computer

Step 2.

Reinstalling the Windows Media Player:
1. Go to Start and in the search type "Turn Windows features On or Off".
2. Click on "Turn Windows features On or Off".
3. Browse to the Media Features and place a check mark in front of Windows Media Player.
4. Restart the Computer.

Try playing the file now.
(This is for Vista and Windows7)

Or you could install GOM Player - it plays everything Media player does and more.

Get it here:

I would try this:

SYMPTOM:
======
The user interface of Windows Media Player did not show up.

CAUSE:
=====
The Media Library information in the user profile was corrupt. We got this conclusion because WMP worked fine in the other user accounts.

RESOLUTION:
=========
Clear up the Media Library folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Media Player

Manually uninstall Windows Media Player and reinstall it.

Another option, apparently it's possible for WMP to open in a position off of the screen. Are you able to right-click on the WMP tab to see a 'move' option? If so, select 'move' and use your arrow keys to try to move WMP back onto the screen.

:mad:

Not working. I reinstalled and rebooted and still the same situation. I tried to move it but didn't get anywhere with that. Maybe I'll try this GOM player after I get some work done.

:fok:

Did you do this part:

Clear up the Media Library folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Media Player

before reinstalling?

Definitely, using a different media player is your easiest option. VLC player is good, also (videolan.org).

If you want to fix WMP, I'd try to find where your Application Data folder is and clear out the Media Player subfolder, then reinstall. I think that would probably fix it.
