After being the starting quarterback for the Rams in each of his eight NFL seasons, Marc Bulger was released by St Louis on Monday which removes any speculation that the Rams won't be taking Sam Bradford, the 2008 Heisman Trophy winner at Oklahoma, as the #1 pick in this month's 2010 NFL Draft.
Bulger was one of the league's better quarterbacks from 2002 though 2006 as he sported a QB rating a shade over 91, a pass completion of 64.5% and a TD/INT total of 95/59. For the past three seasons his stock plummeted along with his QB rating which hovered around 70 in each of those years with only 27 touchdown passes and 34 interceptions along the way. Releasing Bulger saves the Rams $8.5 million of payroll in 2010 which they're going to need if they, as expected, draft Bradford.
Past contracts handed to #1 draft picks are an excellent predictor for the future and so the Rams are more than mindful of the six year $78 million contract ($41.7 guaranteed) the Detroit Lions made to last year's #1 draft pick Matthew Stafford. And for the Rams it will be money well spent as they are look to improve after coming off a 1-15 season, well things can't really get much worse.
