It could work if hitting 4th in the AL East is the goal for the next few years or 3rd when the Rays regress when their current crop of youngsters leave for free agency. The truth is that Yankees have a lot of money, Boston have quite a bit of money and trade/draft and play the FA markets really, really well - the only way the O's have a chance is a complete reorganization about how they do things.

I really think if anyone can get it done its showalter though. He will get maximum effort and play out of their talent...they need to draft better though...that is for damn sure.

For the smaller masket teams, and teams who dont throw money around it all comes down to the draft and player development. They need those cheap pre arbitration salaries. But the draft is a crap shoot, and some teams are willing to over pay the player no matter their draft slot. MLB baseball needs to allow draft picks to be traded. How many players and picks would the Yankees traded for Strasburg last year?

I sure they could have gotten Cano, Hughes and more.

I would not exactly call Baltimore small market. They have an owner with deep pockets and a huge fan base, both have been turned off by a terrible, terrible team for the past 13 or so years.
