Who's ready for sme late night AFL action once again?? Please enjoy
In the past, it has been believed that fremantle treat these two local derby games as though they are grand finals, if only to attain two precious win for the seasons of past. That Fremantle has won the past five derbies under Mark Harvey while finishing 11th, 14th and 14th supports the theory. However, roles have been reversed this time around and it is now Harvey, in charge of the 4-1 Freo, warning his players of an ambush from the 1-4 West Coast.
Although having an off night against the tigers, fremantle managed to come from behind and record an easy 39 point win and never really loked like losing even when they were behind early, such is the poise of this dockers team. West Coast travelled to face the Swans and fell by 52 points. As contrasting as these form lines may be, there will be significant interest as West Coast seeks to turn the tide of its own season and its derby fortunes.
Although having a stellar pre season Chris Masten has struggled to find the same form during the 1st 5 rounds of the season. He has been used forward and had two kicks against the Swans last week. Being a No.3 draft pick brings external expectations that Masten, a prolific ball-winner at junior level, is yet to meet. After five weeks returning through the WAFL, hard-running midfielder Rhys Palmer is in form and demanding selection. The 2008 NAB AFL Rising Star has had a full 12-months to recover from a serious knee injury and will return significantly stronger in the upper-body with a focus on his contested game.
Can the forward line for the West Coast produce goals? Aside from Josh Kennedy and Mark LeCras, the Eagles’ wayward forward line has been far from settled. How will Fremantle handle raging derby favouritism? Harvey’s men have had the wood over West Coast in recent years, but they’ve never been so fancied. Who of Stephen Hill and Nic Naitanui will exert more influence? The two WA products and first-round selections at the 2008 NAB AFL Draft are enjoying impressive second seasons.
In conclusion West Coast’s disposal has consistently fallen down under pressure this season, and Fremantle is fast making intense defensive pressure its trademark. Harvey’s young players are giving their side more at the moment and should stand taller than John Worsfold’s men in what shapes as a relatively one-sided derby. My pick here is Fremantle Dockers -15.5 (-103) at betfair for 1 unit
