A second attempt by the New Jersey Devils to sign free agent Ilya Kovalchuk has reportedly been turned down by the NHL.

According to the New York Post, the Devils and Kovalchuk presented the framework for a new deal on Monday but the league would not allow it.

Earlier this month, the two sides agreed on a 17-year, $102 million deal that was rejected by the NHL on claims it circumvented the salary cap. The NHLPA filed a grievance but the league's decision was upheld by an arbitrator.

Now with the KHL season starting on September 8th, the report indicates Kovalchuk's return to Russia could become a stronger factor in the sniper's decision on where to play this upcoming season.

Fuck this sucks. I wanted to go see him in Jersey. :banghead:

This is retarded. They're going to lose more and more of these players to the KHL.

It's not stupid. Kovalchuk made his bed when he turned down 7-year, $70-million and 10-year, $90 million deals from Atlanta. His agent wrongfully advised him that he can get more in the open market. He can't. Plenty of teams would be happy to sign Kovalchuk at 10 years, $70 million, including the Devils. He and his agent are playing hardball, and failing.

Kovalchuk overestimated his worth on the open market. Tough shit for him, boohoo that teams will "only" sign him long term at around $50-$80mil.

My point is, the money is there to pay these guys. Have those rich owner cockfoks pay a penalty for busting the salary cap and use that money to raise the cap of those who stick to the rules.

I dunno, I just hate to see these guys go to the fokken KHL.

Too late, he's getting all 3.

And have a league like major league baseball where teams that can afford the luxury tax blow it up (like the yanks), and teams like the pirates that wouldn't even ice a real team and just collect luxury tax profits? No thanks.
