I asked my computer guru if I should be turning my computers off at night or if just letting them hibernate is okay. He said definitely turn them of.

I don't remember the reason. Anyway my first question is: do people here agree with that advice?

Depending on the responses, there will be follow up questions.

If I knew his rationale, maybe I could argue for/against it. Personally, I leave all of mine on. Some are out of necessity. Some out of convenience.

It's more a matter of personal preference. The only thing you'll essentially do is save a little money on your electric bill. If you'd rather not turn it off, there are power saving options available in your control panel that will alleviate some of those costs.

I hibernate. I've don't see what the problem would be with that. You're going to want to shut down from time to time so windows can install updates.

I'd avoid using sleep overnight. Sleep uses power and keeps data in RAM which is susceptible to being corrupted by cosmic rays and such.

I turn off for two reasons:
- in case I may have let some nasty onboard that can bot my computer while I'm away (even though I am ruthless with keeping computer clean of nasties),
- saving electricity as I feel I need to save the planet so you degenerates can further trash it.

My thing is two of my computers are very slow to get going when I start them up after being turned off. So when I follow my guru's advice and am restarting things in the morning it is an annoyingly slow process.

Lately I have been restarting the computers when I get up to pee in the middle of the night. By the time I wake up and am getting to work, they are good to go. But it feels like a bit of a silly exercise. Like sometimes they have only been turned off for a few hours so the question is, if you believe in turning off the computer, is there a minimum length of time it should be shut off to accomplish whatever you feel you are accomplishing?

Shutting it off for 10 seconds or 10 days makes no difference in the grand scheme of things.
