Anyone have to take the PMP (Project Management Professional) exam in their line of work?

My company is trying to get me certified. The entire theme of this exam is to sound smart / relevant by using project management speak, which might be even worse than legalese.

What a waste

Yes, it is a total waste. As I recall, it was a week long boring course where I get to learn how to put up road blocks between myself and the people who actually do the work. I think it was a course designed to make you sound like you know what the fuck you are doing. In my opinion, it will piss off the people who you are in charge of. Then again, when I took it, there where some aspects of the program that I thought were OK. Of course, I took this about 6 years ago, and things probably have changed.

It will help if you want to get another career however so if the company is paying for it, you might as well as learn when to toss out the six sigma phrase and the time horizon bullshit.

Back when I actually worked in an office I took the CFA Exam. Thing was a pain in the ass. There are more certifications out there, because workers are always trying to destinguish themselves, but the general public has no clue what half these certifications are.

Company is paying for it, so I agree that I might as well enjoy the free resume booster. Fortunately, the classes are online now, so there's no transportation time or stuffy rooms.

I'm also debating about going to get an MBA, which this might help with in terms of my application. It seems like grad degrees are the new college degrees these days.

The importance in all of this comes down to whether I want to leave my current job / move up - I enjoy my job as it currently stands. The pay suffices and the flexibility and free time are great. Not sure I can put a price on working from home whenever I want. The higher up you move, the more managementy things become, and this PMP BS becomes more ubiquitous.
