Phils GM Ruben Amaro Jr. will only get crucified even more for giving away Cliff Lee if this goes down. He really has to do something especially now that Moyer could be on the shelf.
Espn mentioning that Amaro has hinted a pitcher could be acquired? With no farm talent that anyone wants, Jason seems to be the guy to go. Proposed deal has Oswalt going to the Phils, Werth going to the Rays, and the Tampa Bay shipping prospects to the Astros.
Makes sense in that the Rays could rent a powerful right handed bat with the run they are making to get back to the WS and Houston has to get rid of Oswalt's big contract. And the Phils are really desperate for a starting pitcher.
Phils fans remember all to well that they traded Lee the same day as acquiring Hallladay to give us fans the impression they were joined at the hip? Deals were completely separate. Owners set salary cap at 140 million and Lee's 9 mil brought it to 149. Big time city acting like a small market.
So now we can possibly have Oswalt for 7 mil (Astros will probably pay some) and 16 mil next year with a 2 mil buyout before the 2012. If Oswalt can be anything from years back then will look good but if the Phils don't make the playoffs than the Lee give away talk will be bar room decision all off season.
Like Werth alot but Phils won't be able to sign him for next year. Can't miss prospect Dominic Brown is waiting in the wings. Left handed bat so short a power right handed one like Werth, but who cares. Ruben, you better bring up Brown or the Lee talk will be joined by the Brown talk.
