Ozzy Osbourne is related to a Neanderthal - seriously

Ozzy Osbourne, a satanic-theme heavy metal singer who famously bit off the head of a living bat during a concert, is a Neanderthal. Kind of.

In July, the 61-year-old former Black Sabbath rocker donated a blood sample to a DNA testing firm, which has found he is a descendant of one.

Knome, Inc., which analyzed the data, said it was believed for a long time that Neandertals didn't have any descendents today.
"It turns out that Asians and Europeans have some evidence of Neandertal lineage - like a drop in the bucket," Nathan Pearson, the company's director of research, told Scientific American. "We found a little segment on Ozzy's chromosome 10 that very likely traces back to a Neanderthal forebearer."

"I was curious," he said in a October 24 column in The London Times. "Given the swimming pools of booze I've guzzled over the years - not to mention all of the cocaine, morphine, sleeping pills, cough syrup, LSD, Rohypnol ... you name it - there's really no plausible medical reason why I should still be alive. Maybe my DNA could say why."

Osbourne has said he thought the bat he bit into at a 1982 concert was made out of rubber. Despite years of living a stereotypical rock n' roll life, complete with alcohol and drug abuse, Pearson said Osbourne was "a healthy guy, and that speaks for itself. That suggests he's done okay in the genetic lottery."
