Checking my emails today I notice one from my insurance provider announcing NOTIFICATION of CANCELLATION. So I jump on the phone and call up Geico to get to the bottom of this cause noway n hell I should be anywhere near cancellation.

After jumping through all the hoops of trying to get to a LIVE person and now even more pissed I rip into the person unfortunate enough to get my call.

WHAT IS GOING ON OVER THERE? 5 YEARS WITH THIS COMPANY, A LIFETIME OF SPOTLESS DRIVING RECORD AND NO REDUCTION IN PRICE AND NOW YOU PEOPLE ARE CLAIMING I AM LATE WITH A PAYMENT? WELL I HAVE MY BANK STATEMENT RIGHT HERE AND I"M NOT...............................ooooops.

Mr, Wallace are you there? Mr. Wallace our records show your last payment was on the 30th of April.

Yeah, it was, I just saw my mistake, I apologize for being such an idiot who can't first check my facts before learning my facts are wrong. Can I just go ahead and py the remaining balance now and be done with it please.

It's hard to crawl in a hole and hide when you're my size but if there were a crater near by I would have been in it.



For the record though moron or not after 5 years with a company and 30 years driving without a ticket or accident you would figure you would be considered safe at some point and start seeing to reduced rates.
 
dunno if you will ever see reduced rates with Geiko... they are one of, if not the cheapest " price wise" you can get, asaik... is that one of their policy provisions or something? that they will lower rates for perfect records over time? i know the bigger companies do that until you reach a certain age...
 
After being insured with government run auto insurance in Saskatchewan I want no part of private insurance.
The publicly run auto insurance corp in Manitoba gave rebates of 45% of their annual premium back to their customers this year because they made a profit.

Government run auto insurance covers the minimum liability portion required by law, you can purchase additional coverages through private insurers.

Only Ontario and Alberta do not have state run auto insurance.

Buying insurance in a state run system is easy, many credit unions have terminals in their branches - you can purchase insurance for a day/week/month year etc etc. The sticker on your licence plate shows the police you have valid insurance on your vehicle up to the day the sticker expires.

When I was insured in Ontario an address change was often enough to incur a premium increase, so was any ticket.

Under the private system if you ever go a year without continuous coverage (ie sell your car) and want to get insured the private insurers treat you like a new driver with high rates until you get established again.

The private run system is great for shareholders and corporations but the government run system is better for the policy holders.

I would love private insurance if it truly was private. With so much government regulation surrounding the insurance industry it is very far from a free market. If it were allowed to be, milton friedman style, it would be just as cheap as any gov't provided service.
 
Durito I pay $1072 a year and like I've said I have a flawless record.

I mean yeah it is more than the minimum required and all but still high.

I'm shopping around before renewing again but have to be careful cause some of those cheap offers are only cheap for a temporary period.
 
Durito my 1st year of insurance in Toronto after not owning a vehicle for 3 years was $2400 annually, until I moved to the suburbs and my premium DOUBLED to $4800! because the claims were higher in the area I was moving to (15km's away!)

This is without any claims or accidents on my part. Canadian private insurers determine rates by postal code as well as the usual factors, because the area covered by my postal code had a high claims history I had to pay higher rates - my rates did come down to a reasonable premium the 2nd year I was insured.

I also got the impression the private insurance company thought they were doing me the customer a favour by allowing me to purchase coverage from them.

I much prefer the publicly run system of auto insurance that most provinces operate, I find it very convenient and transparent as it is a crown corporation that is overseen by the provincial government - they do whats best for the people, not whats best for shareholders.

I live in a very high tax based county so maybe that has something to do with it.
Never checked stolen car statistics but even if high for area can't imagine a 7 year old Tahoe is on the list of desirables.

so basically if they were allowed to deny claims for no reason and commit a bunch of other offenses that are currently illegal it would cost same price as a public option. viva capitalism
 
"denying claims for no reason" would constitute simple fraud for which the customer would have legal recourse through existing channels. I'm not talking about government turning a blind eye to a criminal enterprise. I'm just talking about making it easier and lest costly to run an insurance company, thus introducing competition to the market.

you're paying about what I was paying with Progressive... the only company that would insure me
last week switched it over to a business insurance policy and paying $500 a yr :dance:
