My brother's wife is having a miscarriage

Her water broke yesterday because of an infection in the womb. They are going to induce labor on Thursday, but she's only 21 weeks along and they said she'd need to be 22 weeks for the kid to have any chance. I called my brother today, who is my best friend, and he couldn't even talk to me he was so broken up. They have one baby boy and were expecting a girl. I can't identify emotionally with this. I don't even know what to say really. I only hope it doesn't cause a rift in their marriage somehow.

that blows. it happens alot more than people know about. and it can really mess some women up severely....others bounce back from it. for the men, its difficult to know how to respond, some relationships do suffer, but the other side of the coin is present too. Many time in the midst of tragedy, families grow even closer.

Sorry to hear it. Sadly, 23-24 weeks is generally the absolute minimum for survival (I'm not a doctor, but I have a well read pregnant friend). I'm sure it's not the best thing to happen full stop, but to happen so close to the 24 week mark must be heartbreaking.

As to what you can do, "be there" is corny but true. If he lives nearby, go out with him. If not, give him a call. He probably won't want to talk too much about it anyway, I'd sure he be appreciative of talking to someone and not talking about what has happened.

My deepest condolences, Monkey. That's sweet to hear though that your brother is your best friend, those kind of fraternal relationships are worth their weight in gold. I recently patched up a three-year feud with my little brother, and he's expecting his first child late this summer. In your situation, I'd just get him high. Nothing is worse after smoking a big fat blunt.
