Movies discussion - 6/7/10

Saw a few odds and ends this week.

Alice in Wonderland - Disappointing for me. It does not capture the fantastic spirit of the beloved source material at all. It is really just a conventional Hollywood story of good versus evil which happens to borrow a few of those well-known characters. I felt like it was straining to make Alice in Wonderland fit this random story more than it was about Alice in Wonderland. The art work was very good and I'm sure the 3-D would have been interesting. I didn't hate it but I give it a modest 5.4 out of 10.

Little Children (2006) - I think this is a great movie full of astute social observation and great acting. It is a rare 8 out of 10 for me at imdb. It is rivetingly disturbing and controversial. Kate Winslet gets nekkid. :up:Too bad they overdo it with the voice-overs but I can forgive it. I am really looking forward to following the career of (writer/director) Todd Field, also known for the excellent, In The Bedroom.

The Natural (1984) - It's pretty good. Actually, my least favorite scene is one of the key and most famous scenes - where he hits the home run into the lights and they turn into fireworks. But it is a nice movie. 7/10.

Whoops. I launched a movies thread after this one was already started. Let's learn a lesson here kids: this is what can happen when you get a long phone call in the middle of posting.

Let's make this the official thread then.

My comments:

Bread's very salient response

Little Children was quite disturbing and very well done.

And yes, Kate not only gets naked, but she spends a good part of the movie getting completely railed by that Stud McGruffin dude!!

I'm in the middle of my second viewing of Synecdoche, New York and I'm finding it a lot more original than I initially did - this is the kind of movie that absolutely requires your undivided attention AND a second viewing. And maybe some frame-by-frame deconstruction, unless you happen to immediately notice details such as the first line of Marcel Proust's In Search Of Lost Time, which is shown for a moment. Or the fact that a breakfast scene is actually a montage of breakfast scenes that span several weeks.

That is one dense piece of cinema. Already planning a third viewing.

So does Synecdoche become the official GL movie? Does it beat out Human Centipede?

We know what the official GL band is though. No doubting that.

$O$ ALBUM HAS TEMPORARILY BEEN REMOVED FROM THE STREETZ AND IS CURRENTLY GETTING PIMPED THE FOK OFF IT'S FACE WITH SOME MIND-FUCKINGLY FRE$ NEW TJOONS, SOME PIMPED-OUT EXISTING TJOONS PLUS SOME VERY FANCY CUSTOMIZED FEATURES IN BETWEEN! AS SOON AS THE MUSIC VIDEO FOR OUR FRE$ NEW SINGLE: 'EVIL BOY' SLIDES OUT THE SLIME... BUNNY, WE WILL RELEASE THE DEMON BEAST BACK ON THE STREETZ! FOKKIT.

I love those DIE ANTWOORD Facebook updates, especially when they're sandwiched between friends who are asking advice about strollers or telling the world that they plan on cleaning their apartment on a rainy Sunday. FOKKIT.

I saw it once drunk and I'm never seeing it again. :hog:

But I did notice the breakfast scene.

Interscope better not fuk the magic formula of Die Antwoord.

Revolutionary Road

Caught this one on HBO yesterday while nursing a hang over. It wasn't too bad. Leonardo Dicaprio and Kat Winslet are brought back together for another movie to play married couple in the 1950s. They seem to blame each other for where they are in their lives and why they never got to do the things that they really wanted to. They argue like cats and dogs one minute yet act like everything is perfect the next. It was a interesting movie but a bit long and not enough story for my taste.

Fame

Shoot me.....this was absolutely awful. Not sure what it was about...dancing and singing and coming up in this world. DO NOT WATCH.

The Blind Side

Good not great. Sandra Bullock was alright but definitely not an Oscar worthy performance. Definitely a feel good movie that I don't think anyone could actually say was "bad". Wasn't nearly as good as everyone made it out to be though. It was entertaining and kept me interested so that is a definite plus. Definitely worth a rental or if you have netflix to throw it on your list. Trying to figure out what other roll that kid that played Micheal Orhe is going ever play. He is a 350Lb black guy....not exactly a lot of rolls out there for him unless they make about 10 football movies in the next few years.

Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day

I loved the original Boondock Saints as it had some great unintentional comedy. It has a bit of a cult following and probably why they made this second movie. This one seemed to try way too hard. It was watchable and entertaining but I kept expecting more. The first one caught you off guard whereas this one was pretty much "in your face". The local cops looked even more like idiots and Saints looked even worse. For some reason they kept taking the advice of this idiot they picked up on a boat on their way over to America which in every case turned out to be worst idea ever. Yet they kept going with his "plan" when doing all these killings. Good thing they were as skilled as they were and able to get themselves out of the jams. At least the movie was entertaining and held my eye even though it was pretty bad and over the top.

Matty Rain recommend me another French movie I can download. Ty.

Did you see Amelie (2001)? Very famous movie that launched Audrey Tautou's career. Lots of accordion and bits of Paris seen through pink-colored glasses, plus there's a joke about a Quebecois tourist who commits suicide by jumping off the top of Notre Dame. 7.8 Matty Rains

Another very famous movie is The Dinner Game (Le dner de cons, 1998), which I would recommend over Amelie for you. All-out comedy. 7.5 Matty Rains

If you wanna go deeper into classic territory, Franois Truffaut's The 400 Blows is a timeless classic from 1959. It's about a neglected boy who can't help but do a lot of troubles. 8.5 Matty Rains

I agree with every word of that.

I have seen that big black guy in one other role since then. He did an episode of Law and Order SVU. He played the big black guy.

Seriously though, he played a red herring in a rape case. He seemed scary at first (because he's big and black) but it turned out he was a lovable gentle giant.

So he should look for those roles. Particularly in productions that want people who don't act all that well.
