Definitely a slow season for movies for me. I haven't been out to the theatre since I saw Precious a few weeks before the Oscars. But I'll kick off a discussion anyway.
Just watched one movie this past week.
Airplane (1980) - I think it is really hard to make a good comedy movie. This is considered an all-time great comedy - and I agree - but I didn't really laugh all that much. It has moments no doubt - but there are also a lot of bits that are clearly supposed to be funny that I just have to roll my eyes and forgive.
The one part that really cracked me up was when the little boy Joey gets to visit the cockpit. He of course encounters the casually perverted captain. "Joey, have you ever been in a Turkish prison?" Then the kid recognizes Kareem which leads to Kareem grabbing his shirt and chewing him out. Then as the kid backs aways with extreme fear in his eyes, Captain Oveur says, "Joey do you like movies about Gladiators?"
There is something about little kids in peril from all sides that really appeals to my sense of humor. My phone rang at that point and I picked it up in the middle of laughing my ass off which lasted for half a minute.
Judd Apatow was on Inside The Actors Studio yesterday. His writing/directing/producing credits include
Talladega Nights
Knocked Up
The 40 Year-Old Virgin
Superbad
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Funny People
and a bunch more. I have called him over-rated many times - and it's true I am not as gaga about his movies as many people - but I think I should give him more credit. It is not easy to create comedy. Plus he was a writer on The Larry Sanders Show which was flat-out classic IMO.
