I haven't been out to the theatre in a long time. Just rented a few flics this past week.
Thank You For Smoking (2005) - It is a noble satirical effort about a tobacco industry lobbyist (and the culture of spin in general). It has a very high rating at imdb - 7.8. I give it a 6. There were some bothersome holes for me with characters suddenly becoming unnaturally dumb when it suited the plot. But 6 is not a bad rating.
Art and Copy - This is a documentary about the advertising industry giving quite a bit of historical perspective. I like docs in general and I liked this fine, but I think it would have been more interesting to an industry insider. They kept referring to specific people and agencies that mean nothing to me. It did touch on some very familiar ads (Just Do It, Got Milk, Morning in America ads for Ronald Reagan) and showed who created them and what inspired them. Those parts were good. 7 out of 10.
The Saddest Music in the World (2003) - Weird surrealistic artsy story of a girl whose tapeworm talks to her and a women with legs made of glass that are full of beer and an international competition to decide which country has the saddest music in the world. I couldn't tell if it was trying to be funny or artsy or make significant metaphors. Ultimately it was a minor miracle I watched it through to the end. Much to my surprise, its imdb rating is 7.0. I give it a 3.
Supplemental Topic - I still don't get what the big deal was about Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side that made her such an overwhelming winner through award season. Just a plain competent job, as far as I could see. Reminds me of Julia Roberts winning for Erin Brockovich. Competent - but there are some real actresses out there.
