I haven't been out to the theater forever. It's tragic. Here is a rundown of the home viewing of the last week.
Please Give - Somewhat interesting, somewhat artsy indy film with Catherine Keener and Oliver Platt. It's one of these movies that walks the line between comedy and drama with varying effectiveness. Nothing much happens really but it was okay to observe. 6 out of 10.
Splice - Sci-Fi thriller with Sarah Polley and Adrien Brody as scientists making creatures in their lab from spliced DNA of multiple species. It does not go entirely smoothly! Issues arise, both physical and philosophical. Not totally my cup of tea but I could see it having a cult following. They definitely left the possibility of a sequel open. I give it a 6 out of 10.
Music of the Heart (1999) - I love Meryl Streep and had never caught this one. It starts out as a by-the-numbers tale of a neurotic white woman trying to get her life together and ending up teaching violin in East Harlem. It ends up on a very uplifting inspirational note about the value and joy of music. Directed by Wes Craven of all people. First two thirds was a 5 out of 10. Ending was a 9/10. Overall 7 out of 10. (A rare case where my rating is higher than imdb where it is 6.5 - I am real sucker for love of music themes.)
Adventureland (2009) - Coming of age comedy with Jessie Eisenberg and Kristin Stewart. I don't know how we ended up watching this. The pickin's must be slim at the DVD store these days. Not that it was horrible . 5.6 out of 10.
