We were due for a new thread. Three notable viewings over the last couple weeks.

Pi - I'm glad I watched Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream before that, cause Pi is in many ways a rough draft of Requiem (emphasis on "rough".) The movie's title is unfortunate and I assume that a lot of science and math types hated the movie for its inaccurate use of scientific objects and ideas. It has nothing to do with science - it is about mental obsession, where Requiem was about addiction. Cool low-budget flick. Makes me wanna watch The Wrestler next. 8 Matty Rains out of 10

American Psycho - Thought it was hilarious even though it depicts men as mindless balls of ridiculous ambition. I now understand the source of Christian Bale's fame, who I considered very drab as an actor. It also reminded me that I don't miss the 80's. 7.5 Matty Rains

(I'm not so sure that infamous poster Batemanpatrickl understands that the movie absolutely despises the Patrick Batemen of the world, quite passionately at that. I sort of want to pick the CRUSHER's brain about that fascinating topic.)

Shutter Island - Better than what I'd been told by most. Now, saying anything about this movie would be spoiling it, so I'll just say that you *absolutely* need to watch it twice. The first viewing will piss you off and the second one will make you go "oooooh, ok, nice". 5 Matty Rains for the first viewing, 7.5 for the second - would've given an 8 were it not for the tacky soundtrack and the fact that you *need* to dedicate 4 hours to fully appreciate what is ultimately a sub-par Scorsese movie.

Matty you seen The Fountain? Thoughts?

Where the Wild Things Are
- zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Girlfriends of Girlfriends Past - Matthew Mac is a guilty pleasure. He is just so terrible, but keeps pumping out these ridiculous projects. This movie was terrible as one might expect. Casting Michael Douglas as a cool guy womanizer was just a disgusting cherry on top.

I saw The Fountain while it was in theaters and I thought it was completely ridiculous, one of the worst movies of the last decade. Too much lovey-dovey shit and silly sci-fi. I should give it another go and see if I still feel that way.

I saw Pi in the mid 90's and there was one other person in the theater and he sat way too close to me all things considered. I gave him a look like, "are you fucking kidding me pal?".

I moved away from him. It was the middle of summer and it was a matinee. It was one of my more weird cinema moments.

I totally hear ya Daft. I don't think that Pi would've made nearly as much sense if I'd seen it unprepared. Requiem for a Dream uses a similar approach in that it tries to explain how an unstable/altered mind works - it also uses a lot of the same filming techniques, but in a much clearer context.

i watch requiem once a year to remind me that my life isn't so bad after all

I haven't been out to the theatre in awhile but I saw a bunch of movies from rental/TV

An Education - I enjoyed it and the more I mull it over after the fact, the more I like it. I would have voted it ahead of The Hurt Locker for Best Picture of last year. Solid 8 out of 10.

Extract - I heard this described as Mike Judge's blue collar bookend for Office Space. I dunno. It's okay. Then again, I'm not as gaga about Office Space as a lot of people. They are both decent movies with some astute observation of human behavior. I give Extract a 5.4 out of 10.

Juno (2007) - Apart from some excessive hipsterism at times, I really liked this movie. I have seen the standard criticisms of it and basically reject them all (except for the criticism of the soundtrack. I think they could have gone back to the drawing board on the soundtrack). But overall I'm saying 8 out of 10.

Analyze This (1999) - Robert Deniro is a truly bad comic actor. Like I'm not just saying his comedy is not as good as his drama - no - I am saying he is an absolute hack at comedy. I feel embarrassed for him when he tries comedy. That aside, this is a Harold Ramis movie which has some amusing elements to it. I don't know what to do as far as a rating. Let's say . . . 5.0003 out of 10.

It's devilishly clever, yes.

Off on a tangent, it reminds me of a former girlfriend and whenever I would drive to/from her house, I would pass a medical practice and I would see a sign for a gynecologist named Dr. Kuntz.

Okay Bread must be in my brain because I saw both of these movies this past week as well along with a couple others.

Where the Wild Things Are
I was really excited to see this adaptation of a children's book as it was one of my favorites growing up. The movie never really went anywhere...never had a story or plot and left me with a ton of questions. Why was this kid such an asshole to his mom and sister? Why did he have a Wolf suit to dress up in ? Where was he while he was daydreaming and having these adventures with the monsters? Why didn't his mom kick his ass when he finally showed up back home after running away? Why were the adventures with the monsters so lame? All in all the movie really really disappointed....I don't recommend it at all.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past
Well it was exactly as I expected...lame romantic comedy with MAtthew McConaughey. The movie spent so much time in the flashbacks that it never really developed the characters in the present day form. You never got to grasp the relationship between him and Jennifer Gardner's character. So when they end up together in the end (i know I just ruined it for you...I spoiled the shocker) you wonder why. Leave this one to be as well.

Butterfly Effect 2
So I never knew that there was a sequel to the original Butterfly Effect but evidently there are 2, Awesome right? EHHH...kinda. The movie has the same general premise...something happens and then the main character realizes that he can go back in time and change it but then everything is different in the future. The only problem in this movie, the "consequences" to make changes to the past weren't all that bad. The dude kept over reacting and thinking that it was worse than it was. He keeps going back and changing things when they weren't all that bad. I get going back the first time to save the lives of your friends but the other times were unneeded. It was entertaining enough though.. so I didn't mind it.

The Informant
This was a movie that I was looking forward to because I love Matt Damon. He plays a quirky numbers guy that is put into a high profile position at a company that is at the heart of the Corn Industry. He ends up helping the FBI build a case against the company's high execs with regards to price fixing of corn. Little does he know that everything he does and every lie that he tells will end up coming back to bite him. Thought the movie would be more funny than it was but it was still pretty good. It is roughly based ona true story which makes it a little more intriguing. The only thing about it, it was about 2 and a half hours long. You have to be REALLY good to hold my attention for that long.

I actually hated Juno. I thought it tried way too hard to be "smart" and "cool". It was one of those movies that was made with the intention of cleaning up the small time awards at places like Sundance and crap....didn't do it for me. I really can't stand that actress in it too....Can't think of her name but she annoys the hell out of me.
