Busy week for me - didn't take in any movies. Just looking at a few shows on DVD.

Doc Martin (Seasons 1 & 2) - British series about a grumpy surgeon who has to leave his prestigious practice in London when he develops an aversion to blood. He moves to a small scenic town full of aggressively quirky characters to become the town GP. It's watchable. It is classified as a comedy and there is a tribute on the cover that says ABSOLUTELY BLOODY HILARIOUS! I wouldn't say that. I find it more charming than funny. There are a few laughs. My buddy gave me the DVD's of the first 4 seasons and I will keep watching. It is suitable for turning your brain off and watching while having a late night snack. 5.4 out of 10

Sons of Anarchy (Season 1) - I got the first disc of that which is the first 3 episodes. I'm liking it. I'm going to keep watching. Unfortunately I got the DVD through zip.ca and they seem to be sending me stuff from my list in random order. I don't know when I will get the next DVD. Too soon for a rating just yet.

The Kennedy's (Mini-series) - This wrapped up last night. I basically enjoyed it. I suppose the big thing for a lot of viewers would be the splashy depictions of the Kennedy men's infidelities. Personally I enjoyed the political stuff, particularly the take on the Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile Crisis. Barry Pepper was excellent as Bobby Kennedy. Katie Holmes was odd and disturbing as Jackie. Overall 6 out of 10.

I think I will start on sons of anarchy. I've been slowly going through the sopranos and been on a big national geographic animal film kick (I recommend ultimate crocodiles)

watching some documentary now called The Human Experience

I started watching Treme recently. I'm not sure what to make of it. I have watched the first 2 episodes - and one of those was a double - and I can't say there is much going on yet. It seems like something could be percolating - maybe it's just very patient story-telling - but I don't know.

It seems like there is a lot of music in it. Some of it is okay but overall that is not my favorite idea.

David Simon, who was a major creative force behind the Wire and Homicide, is involved so Treme gets all kinds of latitude. I'll wait and see where it goes. Except now I am stuck waiting for zip.ca to send me the next disk and there is no telling when that will be. They've been pretty random lately.

I'll check it out I am a big Simon fan, ever since I read "The Corner"

No but seriously man, who here has seen Treme and what do you think?

I got the next disk and watched the next episode and I don't know. It's not grabbing me. With a show like The Wire or The Sopranos or many others I could name, I would finish an episode and have to hold myself back from immediately watching the next and one after another.

When I think of watching the next episode of Treme, it feels more like a chore.

Simply put: it needs more plot. We've got all these characters. About half of them I don't even like all that much. We have established the setting and the post-Katrina atmosphere. I need more actual stuff to happen. Like okay, chicky-poo is struggling to keep her restaurant going and other chicky-poo want to get her roof fixed and dude-guy is having trouble getting enough gigs playing trombone to make ends meet.

People are going around picking up the pieces. Okay fine so let's have something happen.

It's building up a bit but it is slow.

From where I sit, it would help a lot if the music was better. They have obviously made a conscious choice that music is going to be a big part of the show. And they aren't just going to talk about it - they're going to have whole songs or big chunks of songs a couple times in every episode.

I can appreciate and relate to the idea that music is very important to people - so as a concept I could get behind it. But personally, I don't find that particular regional style of music all that interesting. I don't want to hear as much of it as they're trying to feed me.

Yeah, not exactly the kinda music you wanna listen to while sitting on the couch.

Series gets good reviews though, I think I should give it a second chance. The first episode of The Wire was pretty fokken slow too.

I'm going to keep watching but right now, as I say, it feels like a bit of a chore. It is historically interesting to take a look at some stories from that place and time but watching it feels too much like sitting in class.

I want more than just watching people go about their day-to-day lives (regularly interrupted by music I am only so-so on).

I watched another episode of Treme with dinner. It's drawing me in a bit more but it's not like I'm sitting here wondering anxiously when the next time is that I can squeeze in another episode.

Still too much music. They get some promising little things going but then they kill the momentum. I don't think that is going to change.

I really want to like this and I'm trying but my mind wanders away completely at times.

Saw Downfall, a korean soft core slash historical drama around the time president Park Chung Hee got assassinated, reflecting how throughout dictatorship he industrialized and enriched the country but throwing lots of countryside peasants into prostitution. Told through the story of a 17 year old hooker. Good subject, bad execution. 3 out of 10 Matty Rains.
