Inception - After watching this for the third time in Orlando this past weekend, I can truthfully say that it is one of my most favorite movies ever. I love everything about it.

Terminator Salvation - After seeing this actor in three recent big movies (Terminator Salvation, Avatar, Clash of the Titans) I guess he is the new stud in town, so I made a point to learn his name. Sam Worthington. Welcome to my vocabulary.

Scary robots, some pretty cool special effects. Decent enough way to waste away a couple of hours.

Drag Me To Hell
- Goofy, over-the-top, cheesy horror flick. We LOL'd several times at the absurdity of it all. It was a great Lazy Sunday treat.

Movies discussion for 8/23/10

Here's what I looked at in the last week

Mother - the actual title is Madeo - it is a South Korean flick with subtitles, fairly new out on DVD. It's good. It doesn't have a Hollywood slickness to it and it is set in a foreign society with different customs than we are used to so it took some time to get oriented (pun intended). But once I settled in, I found an absorbing psychological/crime/mystery story with almost a Hitchcock vibe to it.

Hitchcock meets kato. :kato: I give it a solid 7 out of 10.

Gangs of New York (2002) - This was my first time seeing it since it came out. I had reservations the first time and it turns out I still have the same reservations. Interesting premise but with very conventional/formulaic plot elements. Cameron Diaz was just wrong. Although I like Dicaprio in general, I didn't like him in this role very much. If I really want to nitpick, there were some laughably phony bits in some of the fight scenes. It's a good movie but definitely a notch below the best of Scorsese in my book. 6.9 out of 10.

Charlie Wilson's War (2007) - I really love this movie. It's a Mike Nichols film with a very crisp Aaron Sorkin screenplay. Deceptively simple story about the US reaction to the 1980 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. It can be taken simply on that basis or it can have profound significance when viewed in light of what has happened since. 9 out of 10.

I saw that. Hilarious in a crappy teen-movie kinda way. Not fresh enough in my memory to award it a precise number of Matty Rains but I remember enjoying it cause was intentionally silly.

I liked Cameron Diaz quite a bit in Gangs of New York. Leo probably wasn't the best choice but I thought he was quite convincing. Anyway, to me what makes the movie is larger-than-life Bill The Butcher and the whole mid-1800's atmosphere.

Now I will admit that I had assumed the movie was mostly fantasy - I only found out recently that it was trying to be historically accurate. That does change my perception. Not sure how but it does.

I had to go check how I rated Drag Me To Hell. I gave it a 5 out of 10 so I didn't hate it. I recall some extreme absurdity and if I tried to take it seriously, it would have been much lower but it was more about the cheesy comedy for me.

The Bounty Hunder

Fact...Jennifer Aniston is hot. Fact...she is not a good actress. Fact....this movie was horrible. Fact...I knew it was going to be bad going into it. Fact....Jennifer Aniston as a reporter is completely not believable. The premise was awful...estranged husband and wife are caught on different sides of the law. He is a bounty hunter and has to bring her in for skipping bail. She is researching a story about some crooked cops...they end up coming together to solve the mystery together...lame.

Hot Tub Time Machine

I thought it was pretty damn good. Was it absolutely hilarious...nope. Was it entertaining? Sure. Would I watch it again? yes. Would I buy it? No. 3 friends accidentally travel back in time to the 80's where they were "the shit" They must figure out how to get back and not change things as to cause a ripple effect ala The Butterfly Effect. Decent cast...a couple good jokes sprinkled in...and halfway good story. A couple boobs and penis jokes also in there to make it more interesting. Not to mention some gambling! Who wouldn't take information from the future to bet on games???? I know all of us here would! Worth a see...
