The State: Season 4 - Finally got around to watching the last season, after buying the complete series. Early 90's sketch comedy show on MTV. Seasons 2 & 3 were just dreadful, following a stellar opening campaign. I was pleasantly surprised that Season 4 made a return to the witty & clever funny. I should really try to catch Reno 911 more (most of the cast being The State alumni).

Menace II Society - One of several 90's gangbanger films to emerge, and one of my favorite. The message is standard protocol. You live by the gun, you die by the gun. We get it. The opening scene remains a classic. "Whut 'chu say bout my mama?!?!" Loads of laughs as the bullets fly! :lmao:

The lesson, as always: black people are funny.

'Menace' also gave us one of my favorite gifs. These two nice men are obviously having a disagreement about the topic at hand, and through the gift of communication, work together to come to a solution. I like that.

The Wire Season 2 - We have been knocking these out this weekend. Almost done, and I'm into it. Loving the fact that the most annoying piss ant, Ziggy, finally snapped at the expense of some Greeks. Any time that "malaka" and "poustis" are blasting from my tv, it is a good day.

TrueBlood Season 3
- Never saw this before. Hear lots of talk. Robyn put on some quick recap of the first two seasons that HBO does so I'm not COMPLETELY lost. Watched first three episodes of this season. I'll be honest, I don't really care about what is going on. I'm still a bit lost. But I'm enjoying the show because it makes me horny. I swear to God if that redhead ever gets naked I'm going to be a very happy boy.

:fivergays:

Love Liza - I'm on a huge Philip Seymour Hoffman kick. There's not much that he can do that I won't deem as fantastic. Doubt, Synecdoche, Owning Mahoney, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, etc etc. The guy is just money. He makes you feel uncomfortable, and I like that.

I figured it was time for a 'Liza' reviewing. It wasn't as unsettling as I remembered it being many years ago. Perhaps it's just me becoming hardened. Either way, a grown man huffing gasoline with teenagers is not your Disney film of the week. PSH wins again.

Agree 100% on Menace to Society and Love Liza

Never thought those two movies would ever be paired in the same conversation

Owning Mahoney is a great flick but Love Liza is on another level of depression

I love the part where he goes to the airplane show with that nerd and gets kicked out

That nerdy buddy of his is hilarious. They could give that guy his own show and I wouldn't miss an episode.

Crazy Heart - A great performance by Jeff Bridges. I enjoyed the mood of it, some of the dialogue, and the music. Other than that, it was a little flat. The character arcs weren't particularly compelling or believable. It didn't really leave me with anything, but I didn't regret seeing it. I'll probably even watch it again with reno cool. 5 out of 10 MattyRains.

Hot Tub Time Machine - It's just not very good. Way too many forced scatological jokes, and not nearly enough genuine humor for a movie this silly. It's partially redeemed by a third act that's a little more interesting and engaging than the rest of the movie, and some decent performances (Chevy Chase being the notable exception). 4 out of 10 MattyRains.

Kick-Ass - Holy crap, what a great movie! So well done. Some of the best violence I've seen outside of a Tarantino film. Hit-Girl is amazing. Hey plommer, an eleven-year-old assassin who uses the word "cunt". 9 out of 10 MattyRains.

So many great characters in that season - I loved the Sobotkas, "The Greek" and his Greek partner, on top of the huge regular cast. Barely a weak character in the lot. What a dense fucking show.

I'm also loving how they are keeping the Barksdale/Stringer Bell storyline going. Big things are going to happening there real soon. I can feel it. As soon as they clear up this little mess on the docks, I think Stringer Bell is going to make his move. And it will cause mass ripples.

Stringer Bell scares me.

I think I have only seen one movie since the last discussion:

28 Weeks Later - It wasn't my choice and it's not really my thing. I get bogged down in how impossibly stupid and inept the people are rather than just relaxing and accepting what I am being served. But still, not horrible. It is an above average example of the genre. Mild thumbs up. 5.2 out of 10.

Other than that I caught up on some TV.

Season 1 of Hung. Are TV seasons getting shorter and shorter? This was only 10 episodes, each about 25 minutes. I watched the whole thing in a couple days. I liked it. It is certainly not in the discussion of greatest HBO series but it's watchable and I am sure I will check out the second season when it comes along. 6 out of 10.

Season 6 of Entourage - Again, it only took a couple days to watch the whole season. You get exactly what you expect. Shallow entertainment and escapism. 6 out of 10.

Menace II Society - I don't really care for these movies. Five minutes in, I already knew that the main character was going to be taken out like Ricky in BITH. I was, however, slightly interested when Bread told me that Tw0paCk Shaker kicked the crap out of the Hughes Brothers after he lost his role in the movie. I just read up on the urban legend and as I suspected, Tupac sent his thug posse after one of the brothers. 12 thugs to 1 movie director (Tupac not being one of the 12), no big shocker there. The lead character looked like Stern's Beetlejuice, which made it difficult to take him seriously as an actor. I give this movie 1 out of 10 MattyRains. lol hip hop message movies.

The State - It is ok. Some funny characters.

The Wire Season 2 - I had been really annoyed with Ziggy up until the point he took on an alcoholic duck as a pet.

TrueBlood Season 3
- There are so many cheesy things about this show, but I love it. I heard one of my favorite songs by Gov't Mule in the background during one of the bar scenes, which surprised me. This show has also made me slightly interested in humping a vampire at least once. Also, the werewolves are 1 million times more realistic than the Twilight werewolves.

Love Liza - Loved it. Favorite scene was when Wilson decided to take an impromptu swim in the lake during a miniature boat race. Using the song 'Corpus Christi Carol', I was almost certain he was going to drown Jeff Buckley style. The music in this movie was brilliantly chosen and doesn't reflect what you would assume a severely depressed and confused individual would be feeling. There are very few actors who perfectly select movie rolls. With the exception of Along Came Polly, Philip Seymour Hoffman is one of them.

Agreed. It's become a guilty pleasure for me, where it was once a clever show that made fun of Hollywood's shallowness.

Still, if you ask me, Ari Gold goes down as one of the great TV characters of all time. If I could get away with it I would speak using nothing but Ari Gold quotes.
