Veryyyy slow week for me.

Chicago - It was clever enough. I enjoyed the concept. I enjoyed the thought behind several of the musical numbers. But it's just not my cup of tea. Took two days to get through it and I fell asleep on both days. Catherine Zeta Jones was weirding me out for some reason. I did enjoy the public execution turned circus disappearing act. That was clever.

If you want to watch a REAL musical check out 'From Justin to Kelly.' Tee hee.

I have seen the stage show twice, which is pretty good, but it could never take you where the movie did. Roxy, played by Renee Zellweger, is a narcissistic mousy housewife who dreams of becoming a star. After murdering her boyfriend, she escapes her drab reality on death row by envisioning everything as an extravagant musical number. Although the character of Velma Kelly is intended to be abrasive, Zeta Jones was overkill. And they should have replaced her when they found out she was pregnant. Her character came across as bitter, weird and swollen. Renee Zellweger, Richard Gere and John C. Reilly were fantastic in their roles. And we even had a special appearance from The Wire's McNulty. My favorite scene:

I agree. I remember criticizing her when the movie came out and people thought I was just being mean. Like I'm sure she is a better dancer than the average person walking down the streets, but she was nowhere near good and fit enough to be doing that role. Clunking and clod-hopping around. I kept thinking, any one of those background dancers could be doing a better job of that role.

But they gave her the Oscar and it's not like those guys ever do anything stupid.

Anyway, I saw a couple new releases to DVD this week

Brooklyn's Finest - I enjoyed the first 3/4 of it quite a lot and was sailing along thinking this might be a 7/10 flick. But it fell apart at the end in a way that really dropped my assessment of it as a whole. I find it comparable to Antoine Fuqua's other film, Training Day. Good acting but some absurdity with the story. Trying too hard. 5.5 out of 10.

A Single Man - Colin Firth got a Best Actor Oscar nomination for this. It was deserved I suppose. On the converse, this was a very rare case of me not enjoying Julianne Moore. She acted well but she was doing a bad accent which I found very distracting. The movie itself is very artsy and style-based. I felt like I was in a perfume ad or something a lot of the time. In terms of content it was like a sequel to Brokeback Mountain but instead of modern-day cowboys it was 1962 academia. It dealt with the question of what would have happened to dude-guy after he lost the love of his life. Not a bad premise and there were some very touching, thoughtful bits. But there were some false notes. The ending, I found lame.
6 out of 10.

A big thing for me in the world of movies right now: the new Christopher Nolan picture Inception is released on Friday. I don't think I have actually been to the theatre to see a movie since Crazy Heart - so that's been awhile - but I expect to go see Inception on opening day.

Yeah I have been talking about this movie for a few months now. Very psyched. I will go Saturday after the Brock Landers day. I like Nolan very much. Memento is still my favorite though, as much as I liked Batman. Wasn't impressed with Insomnia...maybe I need to watch it again.

I loved Memento and Batman Begins. I was impressed with Insomnia and Following. The Prestige was almost a great movie. There was the basic problem of having what happened occurring in the real world; some of us had problems accepting that. But there is always an undeniable complexity and intelligence to the presentation which few writer/directors can pull off.

If nothing else The Dark Knight proves he has the chops for adding top-notch visual artistry to the mix - which I assume will be important in Inception.

Nolan is one of only a few guys out there where I am always ready to run out and see what he does next.

I was so disappointed with this movie. I thought the only good acting was Don Cheadle. There really is no suspense and not much happens. I would say 3/10 for me.

I have been waiting for this movie for months. Have plans to see it tonight. I hate going into movies with high expectations because most movies never meet them. But I think this one might live up to my expectations and go beyond.

just finished watching Greenberg, still not sure just how much I liked the movie but overall it was a pleasant surprise for a Ben Stiller movie, from what I remember the movie was marketed as a comedy but that was the furthest thing from what it actually was, if you've ever been consumed by anxiety and are a bit OCD ish then this is the movie for you

Who the fuck suggested that Funny Games, the one with Naomi Watts, was a great movie? WHO THE FUCK SAID THAT? You motherfucking prankster.

1 Matty Rain for that moment where the one killer grabs the remote to rewind the movie itself to prevent the death of his partner. Then the movie goes back into let's-shit-all-over-our-retarded-audience mode.

The only way this can be satisfying to someone is if you had a role in the making of that pointless film experiment.

I trust that the original has some redeeming qualities that were lost in translation.

WHO. THE. FUCK. SAID. THAT.
