After his statement last month over his steroid use Mark McGwire, the highest profile hitting coach in MLB, had his team's spring training hijacked by further steroid revelations from his brother Jay. Mark McGwire, the 12 time All Star who still holds the lowest at bats per home run ratio, will surely have to answer more awkward questions before the regular season starts when his brother's book hits the shelves on Monday.
Jay maintains that the book is not a swipe at his brother, who he has reputedly not spoken to in eight years, but rather an insight into his own drug demons; however calling it “Mark and Me: Mark McGwire and the Truth Behind Baseball's Worst-Kept Secret” might suggest otherwise. While Mark, in his “tell all” confession in January, told reporters that his past drug use had everything to do with healing from injuries and nothing to do with getting stronger his brother had a different story to tell. Jay did admit that the initial use of drugs, which he said included steroids and human growth hormone, were taken to overcome potentially career ending injuries as Mark himself pointed to, but the long term effects definitely gave him added strength as well as a faster bat speed.
What is sure to be most controversial is Mark's earlier admission that he didn't know what he was taking, something emphatically denied by Jay as he wrote about the Cardinals slugger's off season routine which was made up of "Dbol [oral, 50 up to 70 mgs/day], Winstrol [oral, 50 up to 80 mgs every other day] and Primobolan [oral, 60 up to 80 mgs/day] for a minimum of 12 weeks."
Jay, a career bodybuilder himself, admitted that he first used steroids at the age of 18 and put Mark in contact with his anonymous supplier in California. Although none of the revelations are particularly shocking, it is certain to cause more activity as the St Louis Cardinals would prefer to concentrate on Spring Training and the 2010 season.
