going forward though, I don't think the Knicks really can compete with the top 4 in the East Conference. I put them on the same level as Atlanta come playoff time, by the time they all gel with each other.

and Atlanta might be the team that they in fact face in the first round of the playoffs

The Knicks are now the Phoenix Suns of the East. They will win 55 games a year and get bounced out of the playoffs for lack of defense. The Knicks will be relevant in the regular season, but come postseason, they will be fodder for trade speculation and managerial firings for years to come.
