say I have an event:

85.71% or -600 to win

the odds I get are

-300 or 75%

according to kelly I should bet:
b=1.33 ; p=.8571 ; q=.1429 ;

((1.33)*(.8571)) - (.1429)
--------------------------------
(1.33)

= .7496 which would mean I bet 74.96% of my BR? I must be missing something. Also if you could explain why sometimes people use half kelly and if that is just dividing your resultant by two I would be grateful.

No. Look for the Simultaneous Event Kelly Calculator at SBR - you can compute the optimal bet sizes for up to 15 simultaneous bets and you can play around with the multiplier. Fantastic tool for math boobs like me.
