$20 million a year for 7 years? Seriously, Boston?

The Red Sox are paying a guy who's never given anyone a .500 slugging percentage, or a .380 OBP, and only given you an OPS of .850 or better once (.851 - in 2010) and you just made him the highest paid OF in baseball history.

The fuck? :fok:

wow, that is amazing. I mean I know he is fast and scores runs. but c'mon Boston he's not gonna be producing as many runs as a big power hitter.

Imagine how much Ted Williams would get paid in this day and age

I mean, Crawford is a defensive beast and I did not mention that in my original post but this just insanity. Let me be perfectly clear too; I have no problems with baseball players making a lot of money. My original post is not about that. I just think Boston is overpaying big time here.

Crawfords offensive numbers just don't translate into this kind of contract. I hope he does great because I really like him and I wish he was playing CF for the Marlins but fuck, Epstein and Henry are nuts.

I thought at least Barry and Manny might have been paid more on a per year basis at some point. and maybe griffey jr. but maybe you are looking at the total amount of money for the contract of the length of 7 years

Boston are rare in the large market teams in that they generally don't overpay in the free agent market - Martinez and Beltre have already left this offseason (although Beltre hasn't signed anywhere, the acquisition of Gonzalez means he isn't coming back). The Jason Werth deal set a precedent for free agents this offseason and Crawford is getting ~$3 million a year more but has much more MLB experience (Werth only has two seasons in which he has played over 150 games), is 2+ years younger and is the type of player who won't have as dramatic of a decline like Werth. Also, this is a huge upgrade for the Red Sox and the Yankees really have to get Cliff Lee whatever the cost - he's one of the real winners out of this deal.

Manny signed an 8 year $160 million deal in 2001 so that topped the contract value of Crawford. His last contract with the Dodgers was $45 million over 2 years so that topped the average annual salary of Crawford.

Owned again by Polaroid. Ok, so Carl will be the 2nd highest paid OF'r in the history of baseball.

Needless to say, the guys at Sons of Sam Horn will be having a huge circle jerk tonight and tommorow morning after Crawford's signing.

Yes, definitely in terms of contract value he is 2nd for outfielders. I think only Barry Bonds is the only other outfielder to get an annual salary larger than Crawford's average and that was one year when he got $22 million.

And I forgot to mention, the effect could be double on the Yankees. As well as the real possibility of them overpaying Cliff Lee in terms of salary and years, it has an effect on CC Sabathia. CC is two years younger than Lee and has an opt out clause at the end of the 2011 season - although CC has denied he will do it, there's every chance he can opt out and force the Yankees to give him a new contract along the size/length of what they offer Lee.

Manny received an 8yr/$160 deal from Boston. Bigger in years and total sum, smaller in yearly salary than Crawford. So were both correct.

Or I'm just too drunk to add numbers.

Yes, that contract was smaller than Crawford's in annual terms. The shorter contract he signed with the Dodgers had a bigger annual salary than Crawford's Red Sox contract. But I think we can both agree that it's a heck of a lot of money.

Too much money, but not nearly as egregious as Werth's contract. Crawford is at least a legitimate top 5 outfielder. And the other elite outfielders -- CarGo, Braun, etc. -- won't be on the open market anytime soon.

Not a great on base guy, obviously not a power hitter, although he has some pop, but he does almost everything either very well or better. Biggest knock is he's only average against lefties.

Not like Boston can't afford to overpay. They've sold out every home game for over a decade, and at outrageous ticket prices. Team makes a fortune. And with their current roster, they're set up to win multiple championships over the length of Crawford's contract.

Crawford's more valuable than Lee.

He will score a shit ton of runs, though. Ditto for Ellsbury.

Ellsbury
Crawford
Pedroia
Gonzalez
Youkilis

Not sure if Crawford or Pedroia will hit 3rd. Either way, that's an insane top half of the lineup.

Hope Girardi plans on using Posada behind the plate on occasion. Would be fun watching him try to throw out Ells and Craw.
