You're thinking, 'I wish there was some computer related topic that I could answer Mudcat's question about.'

Well you're in luck. It just so happens I do have a question today. Here it is now:

I have an e-mail account that I access using Outlook Express. It seems to me I would be better off using web-based e-mail. That way (my theory goes) I would be able to access this account anywhere rather than just from this one computer. It seems like a total no-brainer actually. I would gain stuff while losing nothing.

Yet there must be some reason people (myself included) use Outlook Express. In my case, I assume it is because someone told me to. But why?

With an email application like Outlook Express, you can access the mail that you've previously received without having to be connected to the Internet as it stores the messages locally and deletes them from the server upon checking your mail.. You can also backup and archive your mail so that your inbox is not cluttered.

You can just have your email forwarded to your cell phone Muddy and have it anywhere as well. You could open up a Desktop PC account and access your home computer from anywhere using any other computer.

You can still check your email from other computers/devices with an appropriate email application or if the host of your email has a web interface. If you use an application on another computer/device, you'll want to make sure that it is set to leave a copy of your messages on the server if you want the entirety of your inbox downloaded to the local copy on your laptop, however.
