In colombia you either get married in the Catholic church or with a notary. And since I'm not catholic that wasn't allowed.

Wedding at a church seems hardly romantic. From an outsider's point of view it feels like one is enrolling in the army in fancy clothes.

We decided to have a child without being married. It was a planned pregnancy and we had no intention of getting married. Very little emphasis is put on marriage and since we're both divorced, marriage didn't play a role in it. We have been reconsidering it, but time will tell.

There's one aunt in the GF's family that is in the same situation, had a child out of wedlock after divorcing some other dude. There is not a single other divorce in the family. She's seen as a crazy renegade. :

My cousin had a child out of wedlock. Then a few years later she got married to another dude. Nothing wrong in not being married. Only benefit I see is saving in taxes but for Canada may not even make any difference if the tax laws are not as backwards like here in the US.
