It looks kind of neat but I don't really see the point. They score about 80% of the time on penalties anyway, don't they? And don't the goalies just guess where the ball is going. The fake-out aspect seems moot.

Just take your best normal kick, I'm thinking.

Yes, the goalkeepers generally guess where the ball is going. It's kind of (I'm making this up by the way) a 50/50 chance they guess the right direction and a 50/50 chance that they save if they choose the right direction. So, if you fool the goalkeeper into going the wrong way (which the player did here with everything pointing towards a shot to the left) you're pretty much guaranteed to score as long as you hit the target.

However, it's probably best to take a normal kick considering all the time spent on perfecting a play like that. The thing with these tricks is that they only work (or should only work) once.

Couldn't a player just concentrate and practice on placing the ball in one of the upper corners of the goal? It seems to me that if you can get the ball within 3 feet of the top of the goal, and within 3 feet of the post, you would have a really good chance of getting the goal even if you telegraph it to the goalie. And with my very limited viewing of the penalty shots, the ones I see who didn't get a goal are usually the ones who missed the target altogether.

It's not that easy to kick a soccer ball with such precision. I'm reminded of Zidane's chip shot in the World Cup final... the ball floated and hit the bottom part of the post and barely made its way in. Another one of these omg-why-didn't-he-just-take-a-regular-shot kinda moments.

What are you kidding me, they are like what 10 yards away or somehting like that. The ball isn't moving, and it is round. So your saying that they can't practice kicking a perfectly round ball 10 yards and it a target that is 1 yard square? I don't believe it. They have shit out like get bent like Beckham where he is nailing shit from 40 yards away around a couple of douchebag defenders and into the goal.

For every 40 yard freekick that Beckham hits in the top corner of the net and gets replayed all day on ESPN you forget about the 18 other ones that fly way wide, the 23 others that hit the defensive wall and the 14 others that are comfortably saved by the goalkeeper. It is true that there is a sweet spot of the net where it is pretty much impossible for a goalkeeper to reach a penalty kick but it is so difficult to accurately hit it, the players don't do it. Or, to put it an other way, if it was so easy to hit that spot time and time again then why don't players do it?
