I doubt the refs would even know if it was legal. my first instinct is that as long as the ball didn't touch the rim or hit the ground it is legal..... and if he didn't cross the line with his feet it would be legal.

but in this case since he landed across the line before the ball hit the rim, it would be a lane violation....... i'm not sure if they called it or would have called it had he made it during a technical foul though.....

What he did was legal considering the forward motion. However he missed it so there is no need to argue for it anyway.

what do you mean forward motion?

all I know is that you can't step across the line as a shooter until the ball hits the rim. his foot landed across the line 1 millisecond after he shot it.... way way way before it hit the rim.... no doubt that would not have counted had it gone.

my only question was, do they observe the lane violation rules during a tech, where there is no potential rebound? I would lean to thinking they do. otherwise players could take a running start jump from behind the line, and lay it up (or dunk it like Wilt Chamberlain used to do)

I agree with this,
if his foot touches before the ball hits the rim than its a violation.

but in the NBA isnt the rule that once the ball leaves the shooters hands you can step into the lane?

whatever the rules, that was a piss poor display of freethrow shooting

yeah the players lined up along the lane can enter as soon as the ball leaves the hand but the SHOOTER can't cross the plane until the ball hits the rim
