As we come down the final stretch, some observations. I predict a Boston/Vancouver final, and flip a coin on the winner.
Things are starting to settle down some in the East. The top 8 look all but decided. The Pens made the Atlantic interesting with the pickup of Kovalev, but it looks like with a 4 point lead and a game in hand Philly will hold on for the division, big win for them last night. What's that sound? No it's not a truck backing into your living room, it's the Philadelphia Flyers backing into the playoffs. I predict a possible first round exit for my boys, they win a round at most. Sure the depth is there and the talent is disgusting but i think in the end they give Bobsy the reigns in the playoffs and it will be too late before they get Bouch in there. Montreal doesn't have enough talent and Tampa as great as a story as they are doesn't play good enough D; their record of 41-24-11 and a goal differential of 228 GA vs 230 GA is one of the odder stats you will ever see in sports. Amazing. Washington has really surged since the break. I do think they take the top spot from Philly only to likely face a stiff test in Buffalo. An unproven Varmalov against all world Miller. How is that for a 1st round test? That and a possible Philly/New York matchup in which the Rangers look to avenge last year's shootout loss to end their season. Definitely potential for some good entertainment. Boston just has the look of a winner to me. Great mix of veterans/ When they are lighting the lamp good luck getting the puck past Chara and MVP candidate Tim Thomas. Conference final = Boston over Washington in 6 imo.
Out West everyone wanted Detroit to be their babies going in this year with young Howard ready to truly take the throne in Rock City. Why aren't they? Mostly injuries and they will be tough to take down when all is said and done. Is this the year in Vancouver? They seem to have more depth than they have in the past and they are having quite a remarkable regular season. When San Jose was struggling I was one of many who called them a possible dark horse, and they have risen up to the task. Rookie phenom Logan Couture has really contributed to one of the deeper teams in the sport and that combined with Niemi's improved play makes them a very tough out. Don't underestimate Phoenix either. When all is said and done I think Vancouver is just too good for everyone else this year in the West and they take it over Detroit in an ugly series that should go about 5.
A Boston/Vancouver final would nauseate me . I would hate the Sedin twins commercials, Luongo's ugly mug on TV all the time, ad Chara. Ugh. It is my prediction though. I'll take the Canucks in a hard fought 6 game series over Boston.
