Schadenfreude: the Germans are so mean they made up a word for it. But back to your point, there are generally two extremes in any addiction circumstances.

a) The guy is a good guy but caught up in something innocently but became so addicted to it that it took over his life but never stopped being a good guy
b) Like a) but the guy ripped off people left, right and center but was a shit before the addiction, was a shit during the addiction and will be a shit after the addiction

Depending on how close the circumstances are to a or b will dictate how much sympathy I will give the individual case.

Oh, I have little doubt that Sammy would be in the b) category and I do not feel sympathy, far from it.
