Have a pretty nice guitar I got a few Christmases back. It stares at me, constantly reminding me of yet another failed venture in life.

Thinking of getting rid of it. The amount of time it would take me to learn would likely be better used on a more applicable life skill. Seems too frustrating to be "fun".

On the other hand, being able to play real songs would be really fucking cool.

What do you guys think?

Dave, I say keep it and learn to play that biatch.

I so wish I had the dexterity in my fingers to be able to play the guitar. Musical talents have a way of balancing out other shortcomings life may have placed on us. If an ugly basturd like Tiny Tim could get laid playing Tiptoe Through The Tulips imagine what my fat ass could do if I learned to play Tears From Heaven.

Go for it Dave. Find your inner Eddie Van Halen.

Hard question to answer. I have played guitar most of my life and am very glad I learned.

You are correct to consider the frustration factor. Depending how much effort you are willing to put into it, it could take a long time, maybe even years, before you are making satisfying sounds. It's nice once you've gotten there but it is a journey.

What was most important to me was having people to jam with. In my case there was a guitar club when I was in grade 6 and that's how I learned. I just kept sticking my nose in with people who were a bit better than me and asking questions and playing along. Because it was a bunch of 10 year-olds, we had little to do besides just hack around at our guitars for hours on end. As an adult, I think it would be harder to find that situation.

If my only option had been formal lessons, I doubt I would have made it.

I have tried several times to learn. I did eventually learn one Jewel song, which I was able to sing and play at the same time, but it took a lot of practice. I would love to be able to play. There are very few things that knock my socks off than when I get to know someone and discover that they can play guitar or piano or even sing.

Dave, if you have the patience and love to connect the dots, you will probably get addicted to playing/learning. After all, music is just math.

Robyn, this like so many request will undoubtedly be denied but how about doing Gamelive the honor of playing and singing your version of that Jewel song on video?

Most would probably settle for a show your tits pic but personally I think a song would do us all a world of good.

wally, I haven't played that Jewel song for 10 years. I don't even have a guitar anymore.

Learning curve is high at first, if only to develop the necessary calluses and to get familiarized with the various fretting hand positions. Then you're going to spend a lot of time trying to switch quickly from one chord shape to the next... once you're past these initial hurdles though, it's pretty smooth sailing.

Now if you've already got a guitar, there's no reason not to try it!

I've never got past that stage, never spent alot of time trying though...

I wear wife beaters and play the drums though...
Dave, get a drumset, its much more satisfying banging on the drums
if you can count to 4 and get your arms and feet to differnt things at the same time then thats about all ya need
still a learning curve though.

and sell me that guitar

VD

I played for about 8 years then I started to see the music genre slowly slip down hill (metal) I have not played since 2007. I now have 3 guitars and amps, pedals, etc etc alying all in ym spare bedroom collecting dust. I pretty much sold all of my amps (good ones) and my pedals (good ones) but I am still stuck with 3 guitars. The reason I cant sell them is because I play Lefty and there are not many left handed people.

But if you ask me, it was all NOT worth it.....Good luck with your decision
