I had to do it.

Lets start with this. So I'm reading this Catcher in the Rye thing....
Only about a quarter of the way through, but what's supposed to be the big fucking deal. I didn't know it was about some 16 year old kid. (maybe you did tell me this)
Granted the first couple of pages are really good and I like how he keeps saying "and all" :dunno:

point #2

I was playing with the Vegas team and all. Yeah, I shouldn't be playing with them probably, but besides the point.
Danny shows up. He's not even on the team. This guy has lost it, I'm telling you.

So we're playing, there's some altercation, fat Dan (another guy) starts swinging at somebody. Dave is drunk and involved in there.
Danny starts yelling stupid shit from the bench. Really stupid shit, way out of line. The whole thing is :lmao: But particularly idiotic cause most of the guys can barely stand on skates anyway....... yep

I think I read everything that J.D. Salinger published. I see I have 3 of his titles on my bookshelf. I read that all a long time ago and I don't remember it all very well at all but I recall that I did not consider Catcher In The rye his best.

I wonder if he kept writing during his decades of seclusion. When he died, I wondered if a bunch of "new" J.D Salinger stuff would suddenly be released. But it guess if it was going to happen, it would have happened by now.

It's all academic in my case anyway. Like Matt Rain, I can't read novels any more. I wouldn't say they bore me to death but something happened to my attention span about 7-8 years ago. I blame it on sports betting.

It was just a very controversial book at the time it was written due to vulgarity, sexual overtones, and rebellion. Today it seems pretty tame. I actually enjoyed the book, but I didn't find it stirring by any means. I did find myself identifying fairly well with Holden. I probably would have been very similar in that era, being a rebel of the system and all.

The "big fucking deal", I dunno? I'd have a hard time explaining what the big fucking deal is about any work of fiction.

I'm always really drawn to stories about growing up, losing innocence, etc., and I like Salinger's writing style.

I was telling you that I was reading Catcher in the Rye for the 3rd time. The first time I was in high school. The second time I was a year out of college. And, the third time was now. I was thinking that it was interesting how differently I saw Holden each time.

And, of course, people have a habit of shooting people after they read it, so that's interesting. I was a little hesitant to recommend it to you.

I see what you did there.

Is that the same fat Dan from before? Wow, can you provide any quotes from the "really stupid shit"? Strange about Danny losing/lost it. Did anything come of his lawsuit?

Now that J.D. is dead, it's more likely that we'll get a Catcher in the Rye movie.

J.D. Salinger
Firstly, it is possible that one day the rights will be sold. Since there's an ever-looming possibility that I won't die rich, I toy very seriously with the idea of leaving the unsold rights to my wife and daughter as a kind of insurance policy. It pleasures me no end, though, I might quickly add, to know that I won't have to see the results of the transaction.

Really? What is this about?

Wikipedia
Mark David Chapman's shooting of John Lennon (Chapman was arrested with a copy of the book), John Hinckley, Jr.'s assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan, Robert John Bardo's shooting of Rebecca Schaeffer, and other murders have also been associated with the novel.

I wish I could post Will Smith's monologue on the subject from Six Degrees of Separation, but Youtube took it down.
