Yes, you can.
Click on "Go Advanced" at the bottom right of the Quick Reply box and then you can attach files using the paperclip icon:

Well, I already tried that to no avail, Polaroid. No *.XLS files will appear in the dialog box for me to attach them.

I would assume that it's a profile/server side restriction on user accounts.

Sorry, my mistake, I saw I could attach a Word file and I assumed it would be OK with Excel. I just did a quick google and it would seem that it needs to be changed in the admin settings.
