The Dumbass Award for achievement in being a ridiculous pantload for this past weekend goes to Jonathan Bernier of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Bernier attended a special evening hosted by The Toronto Raptors honoring the late human rights icon Nelson Mandela on the first anniversary of his death.
The Giant of Africa, it was called. It was something of a big deal. Many notables made a special trip in to attend. Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, Brendan Shanahan - many others - and of course Bernier.
So when Bernier was asked why Nelson Mandela was an important figure to him, it was not an ambush question. When Bernier was washing his face and putting on a suit earlier in the evening, it was in preparation for this Giant of Africa, Nelson Mandela, event.
Bernier replied:
Well obviously hes been a tremendous athlete, you know obviously what he means to all the sports, you know the world can be changed by the sports is pretty amazing and I think hes definitely got a lot of respect in every sport and he was definitely one of the athletes I watched growing up as well.
