Perhaps am wrong (and please feel free to correct me) but had always assumed the confederate monuments were about white supremacy and in a (increasingly) multicultural society that's why their coming down...

The irony I find is that this probably wouldn't be happening had self described white supremist Dylann roof not posed in photos with the confederate flag after mass murdering 9 (I believe) innocent churchgoers..

For me that's when the discussion started that has led to current events...

I suppose the monuments mean different things to different people, rebellion, anti establishment etc.. along with the convoluted, misplaced blame/hate of minorities. I doubt that the other side is less hateful or ignorant, especially from what I've seen since the election. Their awfulness is just more acceptable which makes them more cowardly. True "progressives" are few and far between
