This doesn't have much to do with the video, which was interesting and thoughtful, but:
Discretionary time. Getting to that is what motivates me.
Evenings and weekends and a few weeks of vacation per year is all I'm likely to have for maybe 12-15 years. Then after that, there should be retirement, and lots of discretionary time. Could be for a good many years. That would be great.
Now there is a chance I will use my discretionary time to create something that makes money - which will bring me to retirement sooner - and also increase the quality of that longer retirement. My next hobby project is going to be a novel/screenplay - and maybe that will be made into a highly successful film - and I will make a billion dollars, give or take.
So hope, I guess. Hope and a love of discretionary time motivate me.
I just want to do what I want to do. I like to hang out with who I want to hang out with. I like to watch my movies and TV shows. I like to do my little hobby projects. Music. If I had more time I would do more reading. Probably get back to a bit of volunteering in the addictions recovery community.
Work, to me, is not living. I have learned to make the best of it and it's not jail as it seemed when I was a younger man - but I want to live. Living is what I do in my discretionary time.
