Chapter One
Wesley and I were supposed to meet for drinks around four which is a little earlier than usual, but under the circumstances I thought it was appropriate. Kellys was a small bar downtown where the drinks were stiff and the atmosphere was dark, so dark in fact you could barely make out the faces around you. Maybe that was why I liked it. The bartender came slowly down the rail, his face red from the neon glow, Whatll it be tonight Lenny? I paused for a moment as I always do. Sometimes I think its better to listen to how a person talks and how it sounds when they speak rather than what theyre saying. Seven and seven, I replied with unusual certainty. Startin a little early tonight ain't ya? Usually dont see the likes of you till bout 6 or 7, Ian quipped as he mixed my first of many cocktails. The way I see it theres only two reasons for leaving the house to do your drinking: must be an amazing woman, or an amazing bartender. His blue eyes pierced through you when you looked up at his massive form. Long brown hair to his shoulders and an even longer smile, which sometimes cracked just to one side. Thats the thing about tending bar is you never know whos gonna walk in with what problem, and how much or how little theyll drink. I cant count the number of times hes driven me home. Maybe twenty.
Im supposed to meet Wesley. He should be in any minute, I said as I took the glass from my lips and slowly back to the napkin as I had done so many times. Its getting blurry, life. I guess I thought life would come to me, you know? When youre little the world is about 3 blocks long and you feel on top of the mountain below. Then, it seems, as you gain knowledge and experience of who you are and what youve become you look up to the sky only to notice the mountain has peaks you could never see from the clouds of doubt which were always there, just beyond your reach. Maybe what Im saying is Im just sick of climbing the same side of the mountain only to see another set of clouds on the horizon. Sometimes I think about it, sometimes I drink and think about it. Sometimes I just drink. I guess whiskey just has a way of setting in. Makes it all seem a little less real.
When did this place start serving minors!? Wesley shouted flamboyantly from the entrance. He had this amazing way of making himself seem just a little better than you. Maybe it was because he knew deep down inside he was no better, really. Maybe just a little more sane. At least thats what hed have us all believe. His gray silk tie, wrinkled no doubt from hours in the wind, came off as he sat down next to me at the bar. Wesley had this really bad habit of driving his Mercedes convertible down Crenshaw Boulevard after work. Theres a community college there and since hes never really grown out of that whole early twenties phase of as he says cruising for chicks he usually drives around trying to nab a young one, as if its really going to make any difference at this point in his life. Ive grown much less impressed with his libido as time has gone on.
