Just caught up on the demolition of the Big 12- I have no affiliation with the Big 12, but its sad to see such a strong conference get dissolved over some old fat white guys trying to fit as many money bags in their pants as possible.

It's also frustrating that "scholar-athletes" don't see a dime of this. The fact that they get a "scholarship" out of it is a joke - good luck with that Slavic Folklore major when the NBA / NFL doesn't come calling.

My half-brained solution I worked up while writing this post - For basketball: Each school gets 1 salary to offer a player; This salary can be set by the NCAA (in good faith) as some competitive wage compared to the brandon jennings money overseas. Schools can still offer scholarships as well after they've committed their1 salary for the year.

A school doesn't have to commit to paying player X after the year is done. If player X sucks, then they can opt to put him on scholarship to try and lure a better talent with that 1 salaries position.

I think this would spread out the talent a little bit (good!), and might entice players to think a little harder about staying in school; at least they've getting a cut of their production.

for the NFL - you can take this same idea and have 8 salaries or something (all equal, or various pay grades).

Any thoughts on this topic of paying students?

I agree it's a money-grab but don't see it as pathetic at all. I understand wanting to grab money.

I have no feelings about "traditonal" conferences. They aren't really traditional anyway. The current conference set-ups are bastardizations of the previous set-up which was a bastardization of what they had before that. And on and on.

Things change. As long as they aren't changing the fundamental rules of the games - which could screw up the validity of my spreadsheet data - I like change a lot.

As for paying students, I say no. Keep it like it is. I don't want to write an essay about it but I just see it generating all kinds of squabbly drama - which I don't enjoy.

Fair enough. I'm not opposed to change and actually encourage it most of the time if there's even a potential advantage to it. My first sentence up there was just kind of a brain drain, and if there's better college football due to a merger then that would be great.

My bigger objection is the hypocrisy of having one hand extended, while the other is clenched with regards to $$$.

I think the current system is silly for these players to basically enter into servitude for a certain amount of time before being able to enter their job market. Hopefully more of these prospects (on the NBA side) start forgoing college and playing a year in Europe, simply the slap the NCAA in the face. The product will certainly suffer if this somehow becomes the norm. Maybe I just like drama.

Do you not take into account distance from home / time zone changes?!? (I tried once, I didn't see any relationship)
