About half a mile from my apt is an ultra cool record store and I was thinking of buying a record player.

What exactly do I need besides the player itself to get it functioning?

Does anyone have some suggestions on what to purchase?

Casper, you can buy players now that come with the amp built in and have USB etc.... Just buy a basic one and you will be good to go. They have a plain RCA output as well so can just go in any Auxiliary jack.

They are usually $50-$100. It will come with software as well so you can digitize any cool old albums you may have.

I have about 16-20 crates of LP's that i have hoarded over the years. I am going to finally build some nice plywood boxes this fall so i can re-organize and set them up properly.

Some have speakers. What I meant though is that some of the turntables have the pre-amp built in.

In the old days, you would have to have a PHONO input on your amplifier that was set for the gain level of the turntable... If you plug an old turntable into an AUX jack or whatever, you won't get a good signal.

Some of the new ones now have the PRE-AMP built in which means you can plug it into any input (not just a PHONO input).. I hope this makes sense.

"Nowadays phono inputs are largely unused because vinyl record players are getting rare. This circuit is is a simple converter to convert line level signal (0..1 V) to phono input levels (0..5 mV), which makes it possible to use those inputs as an extra line input. "

This record store near me has a bunch if cool ass vinyl. I saw a bunch of Tom Waits albums and old punk records as well. The way I figure it, a player, receiver and bookshelf speakers will run me $700 total. I'll need to cut down drinking for August.
