This is in the gray area between a Random thought and an actual topic but here I am.

I had something very rare happen yesterday. It happened and I was like, "Wow, that almost never happens." It relates to advertising.

What happened was I saw an ad - on TV in this case - and it persuaded me to try the product. In fact my reaction was basically, "Yes! That sounds right up my alley and I had never heard of that so thank allah for that commercial. I am making a note of it right now so I don't forget. I will definitely be giving that a try."

As I say, rare. It is not unusual at all for advertising to drive me directly away from a product. For example there was another TV ad for the show Hot In Cleveland which could not have been more efficient and effective at making sure I will never even glance at that show. That's a pretty common effect of ads for me.

Sometimes ads are so insipid and horrible that they will cause me to boycott the product out of spite. An example of that is Delissio frozen pizzas. Maybe those pies are pretty good - I have no idea - but they did something in an ad a long time ago that I found so unforgivable that the name is forever etched in my mind under a gigantic NO.

I guess I should name the product I was persuaded to try. It is a website called lumosity.com. Something about increasing your brain power and mental development - it appeared as though it was in a quantifiable, measurable way - with exercises that are like games.

It's got my name all over it.

I had never heard of it but now I have and I have not checked it out yet but I absolutely will so - advertisement successful. :greencheck:

Speaking of advertising and frozen pizza, I see there is a line of them from a brand called Dr. Oetker.

They haven't actually pissed me off and I'm not boycotting them at all, but I would just like to pass along the feedback that you should consider changing your brand name.

Dr. Oetker. That's not a good name.

If I am looking at pizzas I am not usually thinking, "Okay what is the most clinical sounding one I can find?"

Yeah, no.

I like good advertising.

My favorite ones these days are the National car rental ones that are narrated by Patrick Stewart. They are perfectly targeted and they use a subtle patronizing humor.

I'm going B-I-G.

Good choice business pro, good choice.

BTW Dr. Oetker is pretty good. Apparently they've starting sourcing ingredients from local Ontario producers. I'm guessing that Oetker is their actual family name.

Why must they talk to me like I'm stupid? The ones that crack me up are commercials for some stupid bottom-of-the-line car where the bubbly Hyundai (or whatever) owner says shit like, "My friends all ask if they can drive my Hyundai but I say, get your own!"

Yeah. How bout we take that huge lineup of folks clamoring for a shot at your Hyundai and just drop a healthy dose of napalm on them.

I've tried them and found them pretty good. I'm not mad at them - just offering a friendly tip based on my considerable experience watching several seasons of Mad Men.

The family name is just fine - keep it for personal use - but drop it from the advertising. Get a more user-friendly name.

Here's what they should call their pizzas: Paul Henderson Pizzas. Boom - you got a name that makes Canadians feel good.

Problem solved. No charge for the advice. :handshake:

Bingo Muddy! Word on the street this guy is the man behind the site!
