Soon all these commisioners will have to admit that any adult that pays serious attention to any of these leagues without gambling is likely to one day wake up and realize he's a dumbass. The jig will be up, so they better befriend gambling while they can
 
Too bad he's talking about sports betting becoming legalized within states and not loosening up on the internet. He does mention smartphones but I assume he's still thinking in terms of an intramural industry.

I have to plead some ignorance on the Britain model. How does that work anyway? Obviously there are the brick and mortar shops - which now have websites. But are the Brits controlled and limited like Americans or is there more freedom to just bet with whomever/wherever they want?

With RR on this. As heinous as the things that were said were, the whole story derived from invasion of privacy which should have dismissed any damages. Still think Sterling is an asshole, but no case for loss there against him because of that imo. Silver was in the wrong which he was smart enough to know but it was about appeasing the media and players, not right and wrong.

I agree with many of the foundational points but come to a different conclusion.

As I see it, if there were some clear-cut legal channel, anybody could have pushed it through and gotten the desired result. But there really wasn't, and Silver still managed to get rid of this airhead toolbox that was making the whole organization look worse by virtue of his connection to it.

Any lawyer can follow a legal blueprint but Silver brought this about strictly through strategic influence and pressure. That is all the more impressive to me.

Sterling doesn't have to be gone - yet he is. People who matter are happy. I think Silver is the leading force behind that and deserves a ton of credit.

Britons can play with any shop, it doesn't matter if the shops are operating out of the UK or not. Bettor's winnings are not taxed. The UK operators pay 15% tax on their profits. They have been working like this for about 10 years.

Because the government were missing out on lots of tax from shops operating outside the UK, this year the law will change. It will go from the concept of 'place of supply' to 'place of consumption'. That means operators will be liable for taxes from UK customer's action only. UK operators won't pay taxes for profit from customers locate elsewhere. But the incentive for government is to tax the operators outside the country. Any operator outside the country that take action from a UK customer will have to pay 15% tax on profit from that customer starting December 1.
 
That makes sense. I had a guy in the UK that I worked closely with on the arbitrage front in my early days - Jenxayyy!!! - and of course we were both pretty much running wild all over the globe.

Things changed here and it doesn't surprise me that they would change there too.
