The below numbers say so. I know, being in the weaker NL makes it easier for them to at least reach the WS for even a chance to win it. But the team on paper is better than any of the 3 previous NL East champs.
9/29/2010 Odds to win the 2010 MLB World Series
New York Yankees +325
Tampa Bay Rays +485
Minnesota Twins +605
Texas Rangers +1215
Atlanta Braves +1215
Philadelphia Phillies +245
Cincinnati Reds +1215
San Diego Padres +2250
San Francisco Giants +805
The NLDS sets up perfectly for H2O (Halladay, Hamels, Oswalt) to only pitch in the series if it goes 5 games. Beyond that it's a guess but wouldn't be surprised if Manual went with a 3 man rotation but probably will give Blanton a shot at game 4.
Halladay seems to have tired a bit but will have plenty of rest now and the guy is a bull so clutch at getting out of innings. Hamels with the cutter now has been lights out. And Oswalt, wow what a change of scenery can do for you? The guy since coming to Philly is pitching like the best starter in the NL like he was years ago.
These guys will be counted on to go at least 7 innings with Lidge, Madsen, and Durbin having been the only reliable relievers. Don't know if team has ever gone with only 10 pitchers in the NLDS but they should so they can have 15 position players available. Not enough good relievers to field more than 10. Only lefty reliever Romero has been a train wreck all year!
Lineup of Victorino, Polanco, Utley, Howard, Werth, Rollins, Ibanez, Ruiz is solid like the last few years. Putting Rollins down in the order cause the Phils have been so hot with Victorino leading off.
But the bench is where the team is much better this year. If they go with 14 position guys, expect them to be Scneider, Valdez, Sweeney, Francisco, Gload, and Brown. Maybe Dobbs instead of Brown? All the injuries this year have made them have to acquire a good bench and everyone has responded except Dobbs.
Notice how Cinny is +1215 and SF +805. Good pitching does beat good hitting? Only thing that worries me is Phils bats in unison can go silent at times and SF's staff before you know it could have the Phils going home early?
Made a 1 unit bet to win 245. Just notice I have a small future on Dale Jr winning the Cup series. See, I'm getting better with my future plays. Just have to wait and see how it goes but like I stated, on paper this Phillies team is the best in a long time. IMO will rank as the best ever (better than 2008 and 1980) if they win it.
