even then. I think my thinking was that it it had a big eruption, the lava and ash can go for miles right? Like towns at the base of volcanos get wiped out.... so someone standing even half a mile away up there on the elevated ground would be for sure a goner.

I'm just assuming a lot of experts ;and maybe some or many in those pictures/videos ARE experts, have some pretty good understanding that a big eruption is highly highly unlikely

Yeah, volcanoes that are spewing huge amounts of lava like that don't have those big explosive events.

If those spectators were as close as they look, they'd be getting killed left and right by falling lava bombs though. Even those small looking splatters are hundreds of pounds. Guy sitting on his lanai during the last big Kilauea fiasco lost his leg when a lava bomb crashed through the roof.
