Man it has been a long time since I have been out to a new release. We were on our way to see Hot Tub Time Machine but all the restaurants had waiting lists and we decided fuck it, let's just go home and get in our cozies and order a whack of Chinese.

Nothing much interesting new on DVD either. So here's what I saw last week:




Casablanca (1942) - Very good movie. It is often mentioned in discussions of the greatest movie of all time. Currently it is #13 at imdb. I am less enthusiastic than that but I give it a 7.49 out of 10 which is high for me.

It has many famous quotes and this is a favorite for me:

Renault: What in heaven's name brought you to Casablanca?
Rick: My health. I came to Casablanca for the waters.
Renault: The waters? What waters? We're in the desert.
Rick: I was misinformed.




Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) - Not what I would call a good movie although there is some entertaining goofiness in it. Keanu Reeves acting. Winona Ryder's acting. The independent-minded shadows. Gary Oldman's hair-do that looks like a butt. I dunno. It is actually fairly highly rated at imdb (7.3). A quick glance at the comments reveals people calling it a masterpiece. I find it more campy than anything. 5.1 out of 10.



And I'll be damned. Dennis Hopper is 74 today. There is hope for us all.

American Pie: The Book Of Love

Okay so I knew going into this that it was going to be an awful movie. It went straight to DVD and figured if anything it would be entertaining. Which to be honest...it was. If you like to see some barely legal boobs then this is the movie for you...they definitely shoved as many gratuitous boob shots in as they could and I have to say they were all spectacular. The cast featured a bunch of nobodies obviously looking for their big break...this was not it.

It's Complicated

So I figured Alec Baldwin is funny, Maryl streep is somewhat entertaining, Steve Martin is good for a chuckle, and that kid from the Office is great....how bad could this be? Oh dear lord. The movie actually could be one of the worst in a while. It was 10 times worse than American Pie: The Book of Love. Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin have an affair after being divorced for 10 years....whil Alec is married to this really hot other woman. He spouts on about how hot his ex is (meryl streep) all movie long and how he wants to be back with her. Highly implausible and highly boring. Steve Martin is newly divorced and courting Meryl Streep but really does an awful job and is weirdly awkward the entire movie. Don't waste your time.
 
Kick-Ass - typical formulaic Hollywood doo-doo wherein an insecure teenage boy gets a girl who's way out of his league. Very annoying.

Oh, there also happens to be a lot of ass-kicking and quite a few funnies. Hit Girl rocks. 7.5 Matty Rains.

Old Dogs

Movie with Robin Williams and John Travolta. When did these two guys decide to start doing really crappy movies. They are best friends that have to raise a couple of twins that Robin williams had from a one night stand 7 years earlier. Obviously they are not ready for parenthood and don't know the first thing about it. Hilarity is supposed to ensue. It does not.
 
Jeezus Christ Amby remind to never do movie night at your place. It's Complicated, Old Dogs and that stupid looking American Pie sequel. Ouch.

Muddy I really like the score to that Bram Stoker movie. Owned it since it came out about 20 years ago.


Zombieland - I thought this was pretty clever and overall well done. Your typical zombie flick gore, but oh so much more.

You Don't Know Jack - On Saturday, Robyn and I went to a nice Mexican restaurant at 11 am and downed many many margaritas, which led to an awesome mixed bag of conversation concerning life, death, God and all things humanity. What began the conversation? The topic of doctor-assisted suicide for terminal patients (and how we both strongly back the idea). So it makes sense that we watched this on Lazy Sunday while nursing our hangovers.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought that Pacino did a great job portraying Dr. Kevorkian. LOL @ God freaks sticking their nose (and consequently ruining) just about anything that they can. Hey, I'm fucking dying here. Let me die with some goddam dignity you jerkoffs.

Anchorman - Probably the 100th viewing, and it never fails to make me LOL uncontrollably for the entire duration. I'm retarded like that.

For a movie nut like yourself Mudders, yes, you need Netflix. I have the Blockbuster mailer version.

Watched The Informant last night. So long that it almost carried over into today.

I know this movie has a target audience out there. I just wasn't it. *yawn*

Oh. Because I immediately thought of Mindy Macready the country singer who had a hit in the 90's with Guys Do It All The Time and was apparently diddled by Roger Clemens when she might have been underage and she had a suicide attempt and recently she has turned up on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.

Just coincidentally the same name? Maybe it's spelled differently. I don't know. It just caught my eye.
 
Harry Brown Independent film that just came out in a few theaters. Michael Caine is the lead and all the reviews raved about the movie. It's a revenge type movie against the local dirtbags that kill his friend. I saw the trailer and there was an explosion, a stabbing, and some shooting. And as usually happens, the preview shows all the action in the movie and the rest is incredibly boring.

Apocalypse Now Gets a little weird and a little slow towards the end but overall I liked it. Not as good as Platoon, but still a good war movie.

Unforgiven Not sure why this is rated as such a high movie. Pretty boring. Clint doesn't kill anyone until damn near the end of the movie. The story is so simple and predictable.

Atonement RJ and Amby recommended. Kind of slow but pretty good.
